Sencillo "Can't Help Thinking About Me" - Introducción
"Can't Help Thinking About Me" es una canción escrita por David Bowie en 1965 y lanzada como sencillo bajo el nombre de David Bowie con The Lower Third, un trío de blues influenciado por The Who. Este fue el primer sencillo lanzado después de cambiar su nombre de Davy (también Davie) Jones a David Bowie.
Insatisfecho con el nombre artístico de Davy o Davie Jones, que a mediados de la década de 1960 invitaba a confusión con Davy Jones de The Monkees, Bowie decidió cambiar su nombre y escogió Bowie en honor a Jim Bowie y el cuchillo que popularizó.

El sencillo "Can't Help Thinking About Me" fue lanzado el 14 de enero de 1966 con PYE (7N 17020).
Grabación
La canción fue grabada a los 15 días de que Bowie, de 18 años, firmara con el sello Pye Records como "David Bowie with the Lower Third" el 25 de noviembre de 1965 a través del exitoso productor y compositor Tony Hatch. Hatch firmó a Bowie con el sello basado en dos demos (esta canción y "Now You've Met The London Boys", como se tituló originalmente) ofrecidas por el (entonces) mánager de Bowie Ralph Horton. El tema principal del sencillo y el lado B fueron grabados en el sótano de las oficinas de Pye en Great Cumberland Place (cerca de Marble Arch, centro de Londres) el 10 de diciembre de 1965. Hatch también tocó el piano en el sencillo y proporcionó coros junto con el resto del grupo.
Lanzamiento
El sencillo tuvo una fiesta promocional de lanzamiento promovida por Pye el 6 de enero de 1966 en The Gaiety Bar, Bayswater. La fiesta de lanzamiento (para el personal de Pye Records y periodistas musicales) fue pagada por un préstamo del empresario Raymond Cook, un acuerdo que tomó varios años para desenredar y eventualmente pagar. Entre los que asistieron a la fiesta de lanzamiento esa noche estaba el padre de John Lennon, Alfred Lennon, quien también firmó con el sello Pye como artista. La presencia de Lennon Senior fue recordada como él estando "altamente ebrio" y preguntando a los asistentes "¿Sabes quién soy?".

"Can't help thinking about me" fue lanzado oficialmente el viernes 14 de enero (y más tarde lanzado en Los Estados Unidos por Warner Bros. en mayo de 1966), sin embargo, The Lower Third se separó de Bowie el 28 de enero por desacuerdos financieros sobre "a quién se le estaba pagando qué" con el mánager Ralph Horton. Creyendo que Bowie no estaba de su lado de la discusión, Graham Rivens, Phil Lancaster y Dennis Taylor pusieron fin a su efímera colaboración y se alejaron a regañadientes, literalmente semanas después de su contrato discográfico con Pye Records. Una manipulación sorprendentemente similar de "la división y la regla" sobre el dinero entre Bowie y su banda por el gerente en funciones (Tony DeFries) ocurrió 7 años más tarde con the Spiders from Mars.
A partir de ese momento Bowie iniciará su carrera en solitario. Se le buscará un grupo de acompañamiento para los conciertos y para las grabaciones pero no aparecerán en los créditos para evitar problemas semejantes.
El sencillo no logró hacer las listas del Reino Unido o de los Estados Unidos a pesar de ser razonablemente bien recibido por los críticos en ese momento.
A mediados de 1966 retiro la canción de sus conciertos (la tocó varias veces con la nueva banda The Buzz en la sala The Marquee debido a que fue lanzada en mayo en los EE.UU.), "Can't Help Thinking About Me" finalmente resucitó 31 años más tarde y la tocó en vivo regularmente en 1999, así como en el programa Bowie VH1 Storytellers. Antes de cantarlo, explicó que era "una hermosa pieza de solipsismo" y luego dijo a la audiencia que la canción presentaba dos de las peores líneas que sentía que había escrito. "En realidad tengo que cantar esto....'Mi chica llama a mi nombre "Hola Dave", Entra, Vuelve, Nos vemos si estás así otra vez...."
El vinilo se ha convertido en un artículo clave del coleccionista hoy en día debido a su rareza, la copia en vinilo correspondiente al lanzamiento en Reino Unido promedia más de £ 600 y en los Estados Unidos la copia "Demonstration Only" llega a más de £ 1000. El sencillo ha sido re-lanzado muchas veces (en EP, 10" sencillos y CD recopilatorios) a partir de 1973 después del éxito comercial Ziggy de Bowie.
Reediciones
La canción fue reeditada por Pye en el Reino Unido como parte de un E.P de 4 pistas en septiembre de 1972. La reedición fue un esfuerzo de Pye para aprovechar la nueva popularidad de Bowie, y en la portada se indicaba con la leyenda "Para el coleccionista, el primer David Bowie". No llegó a las listas.

Pye también lanzó el sencillo con una funda con portada en España en septiembre de 1972, pero esta versión tenía "I Dig Everything" como cara B.
Un EP publicado en España en 1982 incluía el tema "Can't Help Thinking About Me" y la cara B correspondiente, así como las caras A y B de otros dos sencillos. Luego fue publicado en otros países como el miniálbum 1966.
