En este artículo traemos la historia de la banda Grobschnitt.
Grobschnitt fue una banda de rock de Alemania Occidental que existió entre 1970 y 1989. Fue una de las agrupaciones más innovadoras del rock alemán en los años 70, una banda surgida al calor del prolífico y distintivo conglomerado del krautrock.
Su estilo evolucionó con el paso del tiempo, comenzando con el rock psicodélico a principios de la década de 1970 antes de pasar al rock progresivo sinfónico, NDW (nueva ola alemana) y finalmente al pop rock a mediados de la década de 1980. Grobschnitt, a diferencia de otras bandas, utilizó el humor en su música en forma de ruidos inesperados y letras y conceptos tontos.
Grobschnitt fué formada en 1970 en la ciudad industrial Hagen, al noroeste de Alemania, de las cenizas de The Crew, una banda de rock psicodélico liderada por el imaginativo y carismático baterista Eroc (Joachim Ehrig). Su nuevo nombre significaba "corte áspero", en referencia al estilo de tabaco. Ellos querían denominarse Kapelle Elias Grobschnitt pero la discográfica lo redujo a Grobschnitt. Todos los miembros de la banda adoptaron seudónimos tales como "Eroc", "Mist", "Wildschwein", "Lupo" y "Popo".

La formación inicial estaba compuesta por el vocalista y guitarrista Stefan Danielak (Wildschwein), el baterista Joachim Ehrig (Eroc) -quien además se encargaba de diversos efectos- y el guitarrista Gerd-Otto Kuhn (Lupo).

Como era común con muchas bandas alemanas de la época, Grobschnitt cantó en inglés hasta principios de la década de 1980, a pesar de realizar giras exclusivamente en Alemania Occidental. La banda acumuló una base de fans leales a través de sus actuaciones en vivo que incluyeron pirotecnia y bocetos cómicos alemanes. Las actuaciones más destacadas incluyen Solar Music, una pieza extendida en su mayoría instrumental que duró hasta una hora. Grobschnitt también era conocido por su resistencia en el escenario, con frecuencia realizando espectáculos de más de tres horas.
Tras firmar un largo contrato con el recién y posteriormente influyente sello discográfico Brain, Grobschnitt editó su homónimo primer trabajo en 1972. El álbum fue grabado en los estudios Windrose-Dumont-Time actuando Connie Plank como ingeniero. La banda llegó a tener ocho miembros. Para la grabación del álbum el trío inicial se completó con Bernhard Uhlemann “Baer” (bajo, flauta), Hermann Quetting “Quecksilber” (teclados), Axel Harlos “Felix” (percusión, batería) y Rainer Loskand “Toni Moff Mollo” (luces, más tarde incorporado como músico tocando el bajo). La banda solo dispuso de tres semanas para grabar el disco. La banda contaba con dos bateristas, pero su productor dijo que tenían que desembarazarse de uno y Harlos fue el perjudicado.
Su primer disco es estilísticamente muy diferente del sonido sinfónico que se convirtió en su sello distintivo, aunque ya muestra maneras. En cada cara del disco hay presente una larga y hermosa suite. La de la cara A se titula Symphony y tiene una duración de casi 14 minutos y la de cara B Sun Trip con casi 18 minutos. Tiene unos buenos arreglos de cuerdas y teclados y una buena base rítmica. Los coros hilarantes muestran el talante divertido de sus actuaciones en vivo.

Ballermann, su segundo álbum lanzado en 1974, contó con el nuevo tecladista de formación clásica Mist (Volker Kahrs). Lanzado como un álbum doble, Ballermann presentó humor y canciones tontas que siguieron a sus entretenidos shows en vivo. El álbum fue grabado en el estudio de Dieter Dieks ejerciendo él como ingeniero. El segundo disco contiene la primera versión lanzada de "Solar Music", una suite instrumental extendida con orígenes en una pieza de The Crew a fines de la década de 1960. "Solar Music" vería actuaciones frecuentes a lo largo de la carrera de la banda, además de ser lanzado en dos versiones más durante la existencia de la banda.
