Introducción
Este artículo lo dedicamos al álbum One Size Fits All, décimo y último álbum de estudio de The Mothers of Invention, y el vigésimo álbum general de Frank Zappa, lanzado en junio de 1975.
Grabación
El álbum fue grabado por una de las últimas formaciones de The Mothers of Invention, con el tecladista / vocalista George Duke, el baterista Chester Thompson, la percusionista Ruth Underwood, el bajista Tom Fowler y el saxofonista / vocalista Napoleon Murphy Brock. "Can't Afford No Shoes" cuenta con el bajista James Youman, quien se unió temporalmente cuando Fowler se dañó la mano mientras estaba de gira (un incidente al que Zappa hace referencia en los créditos).
Zappa declaró en las notas que el álbum fue grabado simultáneamente con su próximo álbum, pero ese álbum no se llegó a publicar y sería reemplazado por Bongo Fury, que consiste principalmente en grabaciones en vivo con Beefheart realizadas desde mayo de 1975. De los comentarios que Zappa hizo en entrevistas de radio en abril de 1975, parece probable que el álbum inédito hubiera incluido "Greggery Peccary", que apareció por primera vez tres años después en Studio Tan.
Inca Roads
El álbum presenta una de las canciones más complejas de Zappa, "Inca Roads". Las pistas básicas de esta pieza se originaron a partir de una grabación de televisión en los estudios KCET en Los Ángeles el 27 de agosto de 1974, mientras que el solo de guitarra vino de un concierto en Helsinki el 22 o 23 de septiembre de 1974.
En 1988 Zappa lanzó You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 2 de los conciertos de Helsinki, incluido el solo sin editar "Inca Roads".
La canción presenta firmas de tiempo, letras y voces inusuales. La interpretación de la marimba de la percusionista de Zappa, Ruth Underwood, ocupa un lugar destacado. La canción termina con la letra "On Ruth, on Ruth, that's Ruth!", reconociendo a Underwood por su liderazgo en la marimba. La canción fue tocada en concierto desde 1970 hasta 1976, 1979 y 1988.
"Inca Roads" en su mayor parte explora los estereotipos de los extraterrestres que se encuentran con la civilización inca. La letra "¿Un vehículo vino de algún lugar allá afuera, sólo para aterrizar en los Andes? ¿Era redondo y tenía un motor o era algo diferente?" implica que un OVNI está aterrizando en la Cordillera de los Andes. A medida que avanza la canción, la letra se vuelve más tonta y parece burlarse del comienzo de la canción. Un ejemplo de esto es "... o alguien construyó un lugar o dejó un espacio para que la cosa de Chester aterrizara (cosa de Chester ... sobre Rut). ¿Vino un oso booger-de algún lugar allá afuera..." La naturaleza no seria de estas letras e incluso la música en sí parecen estar burlándose de otras bandas de rock progresivo y su profundidad divina posiblemente forzada.
En una entrevista, el vocalista y tecladista George Duke dijo que Zappa lo presionó para que cantara en "Inca Roads" y que de antemano Duke no tenía intenciones de cantar profesionalmente y solo estaba allí para tocar los teclados. Continuó explicando cómo Zappa le había comprado un sintetizador (un instrumento que a Duke no le había gustado) y le dijo que podía tocar con él si quería. Esto llevó a Duke a tocar la parte de sintetizador en "Inca Roads" también.
Florentine Pogen
Las pistas básicas de "Florentine Pogen" también fueron de la grabación del programa de la KCET, que más tarde sería una fuente del lanzamiento del video de Zappa The Dub Room Special.

Músicos invitados
Uno de los héroes de Zappa, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, fue invitado a participar en dos pistas ("flambeadas" voces en los coros de "San Ber'dino" y "Andy").

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado el 25 de junio de 1975 con DiscReet. Las primeras ediciones del vinilo en los Estados Unidos de son notables porque tienen el número de catálogo "BS 2879" inscrito - y tachado - en la matriz de escorrentía, lo que indica que en un momento One Size Fits All fue (quizás erróneamente) planeado para ser lanzado en Warner Bros. Records, cuya subsidiaria Reprise Records distribuyó los discos del sello de Zappa, DiscReet Records. El álbum fue finalmente lanzado en DiscReet con un número de catálogo en la secuencia de Reprise, DS 2216. Warner Bros. no reasignó el número BS 2879 a otro álbum.

Muchas de las primeras copias de LP de vinilo de Estados Unidos contienen un salto a las 4:40 en Inca Roads justo después del final del solo de guitarra de Helsinki. Estos están marcados como "KENDUN A" en las ranuras de salida. El defecto debería haber sido detectado durante la etapa de prensado de prueba. Las copias defectuosas fueron retiradas más tarde. La naturaleza compleja de la música hace que sea difícil reconocer el error sin compararlo con la versión correcta.

El sencillo
El 8 de agosto de 1975 se publicó en Alemania el sencillo Du Bist Mein Sofa / Stink-Foot.

Originalmente, el tema "Sofa" solo se interpretaba en concierto y era parte de una composición más larga en torno a la era Flo & Eddie de la música de Zappa, en la que Mark Volman fingía ser un sofá. En 1975, Sofa hizo su primera aparición en el álbum One Size Fits All con una versión instrumental y una versión cantada ("Sofa No. 1" y "Sofa No. 2"). "Sofa No. 2" fue la parte incluida en el sencillo con el título "Du bist mein Sofa".
La versión vocal de "Sofa" contiene letras en alemán e inglés. Según los críticos, debido a que contiene alemán, se destacó más en el álbum. Las letras en inglés cantan sobre ser varias partes de la naturaleza (los cielos, el agua, las nubes), mientras que las letras en alemán explican cómo son "el comedor cromado donde se encuentra el sofá" y que está allí "todos los días y todas las noches". "Sofa" fue el resultado de la fascinación de Zappa por el pueblo alemán mientras viajaba por Europa.

Recepción
El crítico de Village Voice, Robert Christgau, escribió en su reseña: "La música de Zappa se ha vuelto un poco más hábil rítmicamente, que es lo que sucede cuando te asocias con chicos de jazz, pero básicamente no ha cambiado. Y su sátira no ha mejorado ni se ha deteriorado: si su desprecio estaría por debajo de un estudiante de secundaria demasiado brillante, también hay una breve parodia de lieder* que me encantaría tocar en WQXR**".
* Lieder: es añadir música a una poesía. "Evelyn, A Modified Dog" es la "parodia de lieder" que Christgau evidentemente tenía en mente.
**WQXR es un emisora de radio norteamericana.
Legado
En 2018, la revista Prog nombró a "Inca Roads" en la centésima posición de su lista "Las 100 mejores canciones progresivas de todos los tiempos".
"Sofa" es una de las canciones de Zappa más referenciadas a lo largo de su discografía.

Una versión cuadrafónica especial del álbum fue anunciada pero no lanzada.
Fue lanzado por primera vez en CD por Rykodisc en 1988. Fue reeditado por Rykodisc en 1995 con una portada restaurada, pero con idéntica calidad de sonido. En 1996 se lanzó una edición Au20 de oro de 20 quilates con una calidad de sonido significativamente mejorada.
