Introducción
Barclay James Harvest es un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en Oldham en septiembre de 1969 por el bajista / vocalista Les Holroyd (n. 1948), el guitarrista / vocalista John Lees (n. 1947), el baterista / percusionista Mel Pritchard (1948-2004), y el tecladista / vocalista Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (1947-2010).
Actualmente el grupo está en activo, pero con otros nombres desde 1999 llamados: Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd y John Lees' Barclay James Harvest.

El álbum Time Honoured Ghosts
Antecedentes
El cambio de manager a Harvey Lisberg y la firma con Polydor fue positiva. Se tradujo en un aumento de ventas y que empezaran a ser más conocidos. El álbum Everyone Is Everybody Else lanzado el 14 de junio de 1974 fue votado por los oyentes de Radio Caroline en el número 13 en la lista de los 100 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos. El álbum doble en vivo, Barclay James Harvest Live, que siguió a finales de 1974, fue el primero en entrar en las listas del Reino Unido, alcanzando el número 40.

Harvest, su anterior sello, se apresuraba a reeditar anteriores éxitos de la banda. El 7 de marzo de 1975 se publicó en el Reino Unido, el sencillo Mocking Bird / Galadriel de su álbum Once Again de 1971.

Grabación
Time Honoured Ghosts sería su sexto álbum de estudio y el segundo con el sello Polydor. El álbum fue grabado entre mayo y julio de 1975 en los estudios "His Masters Wheels" de San Francisco (California) y producido por Elliot Mazer, famoso por producir álbumes de Neil Young.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue publicado en octubre de 1975 en el Reino Unido. Fue el segundo álbum en llegar a la lista de álbumes, alcanzando el puesto 32 y permaneciendo tres semanas en lista.

El título fue sugerido por la esposa de Harvey Lisberg, el manager de la banda en ese momento, aunque se cree que estaba citando de otra fuente desconocida.
La magnífica portada está inspirada en los cuadros del pintor estadounidense Maxfield Parish.

El sencillo Titles / Song For You
El 14 de noviembre de 1975 se lanzó en el Reino Unido el sencillo Titles / Song For You como promoción del álbum. No llegó a las listas. También se publicó en Países Bajos, Portugal, Alemania, Australia, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Bélgica, Japón y Nueva Zelanda.

Recepción
Paul Collins en su revisión para AllMusic comentó: Time Honoured Ghosts continuó el desarrollo de Barclay James Harvest lejos del barrido orquestal de los álbumes anteriores, aunque hay un poco más de relleno de lo habitual aquí. "In My Life" enfatiza la inclinación de BJH por los coros vocales descendentes fantasmales y presenta una parte angular de guitarra principal que se reciclaría varios años más tarde en "Loving Is Easy". "Titles" sigue siendo memorablemente pegadiza a pesar de su truco de salón musical ligeramente irritante de letras creadas completamente a partir de títulos de canciones de los Beatles. "Moongirl" en particular demuestra cómo el enfoque de Stewart Wooly Wolstenholme hacia los teclados difiere de la mayoría de las bandas de rock progresivo (con la excepción, quizás, de Pink Floyd); combinando sutilmente una variedad de texturas de fondo (Mellotron, clavecín, órgano, piano), actúa como una lámina para desencadenar los roles más obvios desempeñados por la voz y la guitarra principal.

Mi opinión sobre el álbum
Este es el primer álbum de BJH que escuché. Lo hice en casa de un amigo y me lo grabé en una cinta que aún conservo. Hará más de 45 años de eso. Me encantó el álbum y desde entonces soy fan de ellos. En cambio no es un álbum muy valorado. Para mi es de los mejores del año 1975. Nada más comenzar el álbum, suena el riff de guitarra del tema de In My Life con lo que ya me enamoré del álbum. El álbum está producido por Elliot Mazer que en 1972 produjo el álbum Harvest de Neil Young. El ya prog-folk de BJH se ve influenciado por esta tendencia. Cuando escucho Sweet Jesus me suena como una canción más del álbum de Young. Titles es un pastiche de canciones de los Beatles. Jonathan podría ser una canción más del álbum de Neil Diamond de la banda sonora de la película de Jonathan Sebastian Seagul. "Beyond the grave" es una joya del progresivo con su crescendo sinfónico. La cara B comienza con Song for You muy bien respaldada por los teclados. Muy buenas armonías vocales en "Hymn For The Children". En "Moongirl" hacen un guiño a King Crimson con un buen solo de guitarra. Y el álbum cierra con One Night que tiene una bonita melodía y buen coro.
