Introducción

En un anterior artículo comentamos el tercer álbum de Barclay James Harvest, Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories, publicado a principios de noviembre de 1971. Aunque el tercer álbum no ha sido tan valorado como el anterior Once Again, incluye temas como After the Day o Medicine Man, que forman parte del repertorio clásico de BJH. Como el álbum anterior no llegó a las listas y las ventas no acompañaron.

Barclay James Harvest es un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en Oldham en septiembre de 1969 por el bajista / vocalista Les Holroyd (n. 1948), el guitarrista / vocalista John Lees (n. 1947), el baterista / percusionista Mel Pritchard (1948-2004), y el tecladista / vocalista Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (1947-2010).

Actualmente el grupo está en activo, pero con otros nombres desde 1999 llamados: Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd y John Lees' Barclay James Harvest.

En este artículo continuamos su historia con los álbumes publicados en 1974: Everyone Is Everybody Else y Live.


El álbum Everyone Is Everybody Else

Las presiones de las giras que no obtenían los resultados esperados comenzaban a afectar a la banda. Esto desembocó que este fuera el último álbum con Harvest, cambiaran de manager a Harvey Lisberg y firmaron con Polydor. 

El 4 de mayo de 1973 publicaron en el Reino Unido el que sería su último sencillo con Harvest con las canciones Rock And Roll Woman / The Joker. Era un material sobrante con su anterior discográfica  que finalmente se publicarían como bonus tracks en las reediciones en CD de Baby James Harvest, su último álbum con Harvest. El sencillo no llegó a las listas.

Fue publicado también en España, Francia y Turquía. En Dinamarca se publicó con The Joker en la cara A y Thank You en la B. Thank You era una canción del álbum Baby James Harvest.

Everyone Is Everybody Else sería su quinto álbum de estudio y el primero con el sello Polydor. El álbum fue grabado entre marzo y abril de 1974 en los estudios Olympic de Londres y mezclado en los estudios Trident.

El álbum fue producido por Rodger Bain, quien había trabajado previamente con Black Sabbath en la producción de sus primeros tres álbumes. También produjo bandas de rock duro como Judas Priest y Budgie. Se dijo que había relaciones tensas entre Bain y la banda, debido a la preferencia de éste por el estilo musical más duro. La banda quedó descontenta con los resultados de la canción "Child of the Universe" en particular; La única contribución de Woolly Wolstenholme, Maestoso (A Hymn in the Roof of the World) también fue dejada fuera del álbum original. Posteriormente fue incluida como bonus track en las reediciones en CD.


Como adelanto del álbum se publicó el sencillo Poor Boy Blues / Crazy City el 24 de mayo de 1974 en el Reino Unido, También se publicó en Alemania. No llegó a las listas.

El álbum fue publicado el 14 de junio de 1974 en el Reino Unido, pero no llegó a las listas. El álbum fue pinchado extensamente en Radio Caroline, una emisora de radio británica independiente, particularmente las canciones "For No One" (cuyas letras contienen el título del álbum) y "Child of the Universe". El álbum fue votado por los oyentes de Radio Caroline en el número 13 en la lista de los 100 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos.

El álbum fue promocionado con su participación en el programa de la BBC Radio One "In Concert" con John Peel el 19 de junio de 1974 en el Hippodrome, Golders Green, Londres y retrasmitida el 22 de junio. La grabación de dicha sesión fue publicada el 14 de abril de 2008 en el álbum "After The Day" (The Radio Broadcasts 1974-1976).

En Estados Unidos se lanzó en abril de 1975 el sencillo Child Of The Universe / Crazy City. La cara A incluyó una versión recortada de la canción Child Of The Universe. También se publicó en Francia y Nueva Zelanda.

Mi opinión sobre el álbum

En un grupo de rock progresivo los arreglos orquestales sirven para reforzar la melodía principal pero lo que no puede hacer es convertirse en el protagonista. Ese fue el error de BJH en su primera etapa. El cambio de discográfica les vino bien para librarse de ellos, ganando protagonismo los componentes de la banda y su música. El fruto se ve en este álbum y en sus posteriores. En el álbum es difícil decantarse por algunas canciones porque todas forman parte de un todo. El resultado es un prog folk más rockero, aunque BJH es uno de mis grupos preferidos para cuando quiero escuchar música para relajarme.


El álbum Live

El concierto perteneciente a su gira por el Reino Unido en el London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane el 30 de junio de 1974 fue grabado con el estudio móvil de Island y mezclado en los estudios Island de Londres.

Dicha grabación se publicó en un álbum doble en noviembre de 1974 titulado simplemente Live.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum: 

Barclay James Harvest es uno de mis grupos preferidos de rock progresivo y los temas de este álbum en directo ganan respecto a los originales de los álbumes de estudio, lo que demuestra que van en la línea correcta. Además eso habla mucho de la calidad de los músicos. Sobre todo ganan por los teclados (mellotron) presentes en todos los temas y por una sección rítmica más fluida y dinámica. Las voces de John Lees y Les Holroyd son cálidas (a menudo un poco melancólicas) y la guitarra suena conmovedora.
