En este artículo traemos los comienzos y primeros álbumes de la banda finlandesa Wigwam. Fue una banda pionera en el rock progresivo. Su historia se puede subdividir en dos etapas. La primera entre 1969 y 1974 en la que podemos hablar del "Wigwam original" y la segunda entre 1974 y 1977 en el que hablamos de un "Wigwam renovado". Las dos etapas son claramente diferentes en cuanto a sonido y personal. En este artículo nos ocuparemos de su primera etapa.
La música de esta banda única está dominada por los sonidos de piano y órgano, todos ellos envueltos en una música a veces oscura llena de influencias típicas escandinavas. Hay una gran interacción entre todos los músicos.
Wigwam fue fundada tras la separación de la banda finlandesa de rock Blues Section, de la que fue baterista Ronnie Österberg. La banda comenzó siendo un trío con el citado Ronnie Österberg a la batería, Mats Huldén al bajo y Nikke Nikamo a la guitarra. Pero pronto se trajeron al cantante / compositor británico Jim Pembroke que vivía en Finlandia y que había sido el líder y vocalista de la desaparecida Blues Section. A ellos se les unió también el tecladista Jukka Gustavson. Con esta formación grabarían su primer álbum en 1969, titulado Hard N' Horny. Las primeras 400 copias fueran publicadas de manera artesanal por la propia banda y sus amigos escribiendo con rotuladores sobre cartón blanco por lo que no hay dos álbumes iguales. También se incluyó un folleto.

Como otras bandas de rock progresivo que comenzaron por aquella época, como por ejemplo Pink Floyd la música esta influenciada por el rock psicodélico imperante. Las composiciones de las canciones está lideradas por Pembroke y Gustavson. La primera cara está formada por temas de blues progresivo con influencias psicodélicas, jazzistas y de art rock de vanguardia dominada por el órgano de Gustavson que me recuerda algo a Procol Harum. La segunda cara es una suite psicodélica conceptual de Pembroke que trata sobre un hombre de mediana edad llamado Henry.
En 1970 pudieron publicar el álbum con una portada como dios manda.

Tras el lanzamiento del primer álbum, dejan la banda Mats Huldén, Fitz Jenkins y Nikke Nikamo. En 1970, Pekka Pohjola entra en la banda reemplazando al bajista Mats Huldén, aunque también había tenido una formación clásica en piano y violín. En 1972 iniciaría una carrera en solitario y a él dedicaremos un próximo artículo.
Kim Fowley produjo el segundo álbum de Wigwam, Tombstone Valentine que se publicaría en noviembre de 1970. Este álbum también contó con un extracto de la composición electrónica experimental de 1968 de Erkki Kurenniemi 'Dance of the Anthropoids'. Fowley pensó que era tan brillante que tenía que estar en el álbum.
No se pudo encontrar un reemplazo permanente para Nikke Nikamo, por lo que Jukka Tolonen de Tasavallan Presidentti toca la guitarra en algunas de las pistas.
Los miembros de la banda comienzan a familiarizarse con los deseos musicales individuales de cada uno. El álbum rompe la tendencia de ir hacia el rock progresivo, siendo más pop.

Reediciones
El álbum fue el primero que tuvo cobertura internacional, publicándose en Estados Unidos e Italia. Fue reeditado remasterizado en CD por primera vez en 2003 por Love Records.
Letras
En diciembre de 1971 publican su tercer álbum titulado Fairyport que es doble. Musicalmente, Fairyport fue una continuación de Tombstone Valentine, pero yo diría que es un poco más experimental y progresivo. Hoy en día, este álbum es considerado un clásico dentro de los círculos del rock progresivo y tiene una serie de características que lo hacen destacar como uno de los grandes álbumes progresivos de los años setenta.
La versión original tiene una cubierta plegable con dos folletos, uno con letras y créditos en inglés grapados dentro del pliegue y un folleto separado en finlandés. Originalmente solo fue publicado en Finlandia.

En febrero de 1974 lanzarían el que sería su cuarto álbum y último de esta primera etapa: Being. Es considerado su obra maestra y un álbum clave en el rock progresivo. Es un álbum conceptual, con la mayor parte de la música y letras escritas por Gustavson. El álbum fue grabado en Finnvox Studios y Finnlevy Studios, Helsinki, Finlandia, de febrero a noviembre de 1973. Fue publicado inicialmente solo en Finlandia.
