En este artículo traemos el segundo álbum de la banda Triumvirat, Illusions on a Double Dimple.
Triumvirat fue una banda de rock progresivo sinfónico, con una marcada influencia de The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer y compositores clásicos, originaria de Colonia en la entonces Alemania Occidental. Se convirtieron, durante la década de 1970, en una figura clave en el krautrock. El nombre Triumvirat proviene de la palabra latina triunvirato, que se refiere a un grupo de tres individuos poderosos.
Los miembros de la banda original eran Hans-Jürgen Fritz (también conocido como Jürgen Fritz) en los teclados, Werner Frangenberg en el bajo y la voz, y el baterista-percusionista-letrista Hans Bathelt. Sin embargo, esa formación estaría en un estado constante de cambio a lo largo de la carrera de la banda, con cada álbum con al menos un miembro diferente.

La banda fue a menudo criticada por la similitud de su sonido con la banda británica Emerson, Lake and Palmer, algo que los miembros de la banda pueden haber tenido en mente cuando escribieron la canción "Lucky Girl" para su álbum Illusions on a Double Dimple, tal vez en respuesta a uno de los grandes éxitos de ELP "Lucky Man". En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación en 1975 de su tercer álbum Spartacus.
Antecedentes
A finales de 1974, Triumvirat hizo una gira por Estados Unidos siendo teloneros de Fleetwood Mac y de Jefferson Starship. Adjunto una grabación de una actuación en Nueva York y un disco no oficial de grabaciones del tour.

Grabación
El álbum fue grabado en el estudio EMI Electrola 1 de Colonia (Alemania) entre el 3 de febrero y el 4 de marzo de 1975. Fue producido por Jürgen Fritz y grabado por el ingeniero Wolfgang Thierbach asistido por por Helmut Rüssmann. La mezcla se realizó en los estudios A.I.R. de Londres entre el 6 de marzo y el 13 de marzo de 1975 por el ingeniero Geoff Emerick asistido por Pete Henderson. Los arreglos son de Triumvirat.

Es un álbum conceptual basado en Espartaco, el gladiador tracio que lideró el 3er levantamiento de esclavos en 73-71 A.C. La letra fue escrita por Hans Bathelt, con contribuciones de Jürgen Fritz.

Lanzamiento
Fue lanzado originalmente en 1975 en el sello EMI, y más tarde distribuido en los Estados Unidos por Capitol. Debutó en el número 27 en las listas de álbumes del Billboard.

Tras el lanzamiento del álbum continuaron la gira por Estados Unidos.
Después de este álbum, Helmut Köllen dejó la banda para comenzar una carrera en solitario. Dos años más tarde, murió de envenenamiento por monóxido de carbono cuando estaba en su automóvil, en el garaje, escuchando sus propias composiciones en el reproductor de casetes del automóvil.

Recepción
Mike DeGagne comentó en su reseña para AllMusic: Spartacus puede no ser tan progresivamente fuerte como el álbum Illusion on a Double Dimple de 1973, pero sigue siendo el segundo mejor lanzamiento de este grupo alemán. Basada en el famoso gladiador romano que lideró la rebelión contra su tierra natal, la música apoya el concepto del álbum de manera bastante sólida, con las mejores pistas en forma de la esporádica "School of Instant Pain" y la de nueve minutos "March to the Eternal City", que reúne un amenazante conglomerado de riffs de bajo y trabajo de teclado puntiagudo. La música se vuelve efectivamente motivadora hacia el concepto en los momentos adecuados, lo que permite que la idea de la banda permanezca fresca y colorida a medida que se reproduce la música. El órgano Hammond de Jurgen Fritz y la intervención de Moog le dan a Spartacus un genuino aire progresivo, que culmina como debería en la pista final. Aunque las notas firmes y severas de Triunvirat y el serpenteante del teclado articulado se pueden comparar fácilmente con el estilo de Emerson, Lake y Palmer, está equilibrado de manera bastante impresionante con el trabajo de guitarra eléctrica y acústica de Helmut Kollen. Mi opinión sobre el álbum
El álbum abre con la instrumental The Capital Of Power que me recuerda a Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The School Of Instant Pain, en cambio, me suena mas cercana a Genesis en su parte cantada. The Deadly Dream of Freedom es una bonita balada. Y lo mejor del álbum es la suite final The March To The Eternal City. La música del álbum es compleja y sofisticada, pero al mismo tiempo es dramática, emocionante y hermosa.
Sencillos
Ya en 1976 se publicó el sencillo Take A Break Today / The Capitol Of Power. Take A Break Today no fue incluido en el álbum. Posteriormente se incluyó como bonus track en la reedición de lujo en CD del álbum de 2003. La cara B es una versión grabada en vivo en Los Angeles en agosto de 1975 del tema incluido en el álbum, The Capitol Of Power. Se incluyó a partir de 2002 en las reediciones en CD del álbum como bonus track.
Reediciones
El álbum fue reeditado en CD por primera vez en 1991 y remasterizado en 2002. La versión remasterizada incluyó dos pistas adicionales: una versión en vivo de "The Capital of Power" que ya había aparecido como cara B del sencillo y una canción inédita llamada "Showstopper".
