The Manish Boys
Insatisfecho con The King Bees y su repertorio de blues tipo Howlin' Wolf y Willie Dixon, Bowie (Davie Jones) abandonó la banda en julio de 1964, menos de un mes después del lanzamiento del sencillo con ellos para unirse a The Manish Boys, otro grupo de blues, que incorporaban soul y folk: «Solía soñar con ser su Mick Jagger», recuerda Bowie.

The Manish Boys comenzó originalmente en 1962 como una banda de siete componentes, en Maidstone, Kent. Después de varios cambios de personal, terminaron como un grupo de seis componentes, y cambiaron su música de las portadas de pop a R'n'B. Esto lleva a un nuevo nombre, inspirado en "Manish Boy" de Muddy Waters.

Sencillo "I Pity The Fool"
A pesar de muchas sesiones de grabación, sólo tuvieron un lanzamiento el 5 de marzo de 1965 con Parlophone (R5250): "I Pity The Fool". La cara B "Take My Tip" fue la primera canción escrita por Bowie (entonces conocido y acreditado como Davie Jones) publicada en un disco.
La grabación fue producida por Shell Talmy, quien también estaba produciendo los primeros sencillos y álbumes de The Who y the Kinks. El mago de la guitarra Jimmy Page era el músico de sesión regular de Talmy y tocó el solo de guitarra en "I Pity the Fool".
"I Pity the Fool" fue el primer sencillo lanzado de Two Steps from the Blues. Entró en la lista Hot R&B Sides de Billboard en febrero de 1961, donde alcanzó el número uno. El sencillo también apareció en el número 43 en la lista billboard hot 100. Como una de sus canciones más exitosas, aparece en numerosos álbumes recopilatorios, como Bobby Bland: I Pity the Fool – The Duke Recordings, Vol. Uno (1992).

Tocaron en vivo en "Gadzooks" de BBC 2 en medio de mucha publicidad en la prensa nacional. Apareció en la mayoría de los clubes londinenses, por ejemplo Marquee, Scene, Eel Pie Island, etc., y realizó una gira en un programa de con varios grupos con Gene Pitney, Kinks, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Marianne Faithfull.
Tanto el lado A como el B fueron reeditadas por EMI en el Reino Unido en marzo de 1979 en una cara de un sencillo de 7 pulgadas. En el lado B de este re-lanzamiento estaba "You've Got a Habit of Leaving" y "Baby Loves That Way".
Esta versión fue nuevamente lanzada por See For Miles Records en el Reino Unido en octubre de 1982, y como un disco de imágenes de 12 pulgadas en junio de 1985. El re-lanzamiento de See For Miles en 1982 tomó la ventaja de un mercado de coleccionistas desde que la reedición de EMI en marzo de 1979 desapareció casi tan rápido como había llegado. Volvió a reeditarse en 2013 con Parlophone con el título Bowie 1965!

Ambas canciones aparecen en la recopilación de CD Early On (1964-1966) de 1991, pero ambas tienen voces alternativas.

"I Pity the Fool" es una canción de soul blues grabada originalmente por Bobby Bland en 1961 para su primer álbum de Duke Records, Two Steps from the Blues. Muchos escritores de música creen que fue escrito por Joe Medwick, aunque el propietario de Duke, Don Robey (usando el seudónimo "Deadric Malone") aparece en los créditos de composición.
La letra habla de un hombre que, mientras se compadece de otros por enamorarse de una mujer, sabe que también está avergonzado por ello. Después de su lanzamiento como sencillo, se convirtió en uno de los mayores éxitos de Bland y las canciones más identificables. Posteriormente, varios artistas han grabado versiones, entre ellas las que nos ocupa.
