La banda lanza nuevo álbum tras ocho años y sigue activo en giras.

Este artículo los dedicamos a los comienzos de la banda de rock progresivo Caravan de la zona de Canterbury fundada por los exmiembros de Wilde Flowers David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings y Richard Coughlan en 1968 hasta la publicación de su álbum debut homónimo en 1969 "Caravan". La banda nunca ha logrado el gran éxito comercial que se predijo ampliamente para ellos al comienzo de su carrera, pero sin embargo se consideran una pieza clave de la escena de Canterbury del rock progresivo, mezclando rock psicodélico, jazz e influencias clásicas para crear un sonido distintivo. Caravan sigue en activo de la mano del guitarrista Pye Hastings, único miembro que queda de la formación original.

Los miembros originales del grupo, David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings y Richard Coughlan habían estado en Wilde Flowers, con sede en Canterbury, aunque no al mismo tiempo. Richard Sinclair había sido uno de los primeros miembros, pero lo dejó en septiembre de 1965 para estudiar en la universidad. Hastings había reemplazado a Robert Wyatt como cantante del grupo y Coughlan como baterista en la banda cuando Wyatt, quien interpretó ambos papeles, formó Soft Machine.
David Sinclair se unió al grupo a finales de 1966, pero después de que el futuro miembro de Soft Machine Hugh Hopper dejara el grupo en junio del año siguiente, comenzaron a quedarse sin impulso y se separaron en octubre de 1967.

Tras la disolución de su banda anterior, Wilde Flowers, Dave Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings y Richard Coughlan formaron Caravan en 1968. "Todos teníamos el mismo objetivo", recordó Richard Sinclair, "hacer nuestra música, escribirla nosotros mismos y vivir de ella". La banda alquiló una casa en Whitstable, Kent durante seis meses, donde comenzaron a escribir y ensayar nuevas canciones. También pidieron prestado equipo a Soft Machine para ensayos mientras esa banda estaba de gira con Jimi Hendrix en los Estados Unidos, ya que Caravan no tenía suficientes fondos para el suyo propio. Se vieron obligados a dejar la casa en junio y terminaron viviendo en tiendas de campaña y ensayando en un salón de la iglesia local. En octubre, habían atraído el interés del editor de música Ian Ralfini, qon el que consiguieron firmar con el sello discográfico estadounidense, Verve Records, y se convirtieron en el primer grupo británico que firmaron con ese sello. Ya hablamos de ese sello en los artículos de Frank Zappa como una división de MGM en la que publicaban los grupos de rock del sello. Verve posteriormente lanzó el LP debut de la banda, Caravan pero unos meses más tarde cerró el negocio discográfico de pop-rock del Reino Unido y abandonó la banda.

Algunas fuentes citan como fecha de lanzamiento del álbum Caravan octubre de 1968, pero en general se indica que se publicó ya entrado 1969. El sencillo correspondiente al álbum Place Of My Own / Ride fue publicado en Reino Unido el 3 de enero de 1969, por lo que tomaremos esta fecha como referencia. Puede que en algún mercado se publicara antes, o fuera octubre del 68 cuando el sello lo presentó oficialmente.

El álbum se pudo grabar gracias a que Soft Machine les prestó el equipo como hemos comentado en el anterior apartado. A pesar de ello, el resultado fue magnífico, el de una banda bien asentada y no refleja las condiciones precarias en las que estaban.
El álbum fue lanzado en estéreo y mono, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en el Reino Unido, pero no alcanzó las listas de éxito.
El relanzamiento en CD de 2002 incluyó dos versiones completas del álbum, en su mono original y en estéreo, y una pista extra "Hello Hello" (3:12) que originalmente no se había publicado en el álbum pero fue lanzada como sencillo el 7 de agosto de 1970.

Mi opinión sobre la canción:
Bonita balada de rock progresivo con un solo de órgano estupendo.
Como hemos comentado fue lanzado como sencillo aunque tampoco llegó a las listas.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum:
Estamos en el época post-psicodélica y aunque las canciones todavía tienen una aura psicodélica y elementos de jazz, en general los temas ya tienen estructura de rock progresivo sobre todo los de larga duración. Hay algunas canciones de corte progresivo pero abunda más los psicodélicos. Los músicos demuestran gran profesionalidad para ser su primer álbum, aunque ya llevan varios años en el mundillo de la música
