Introducción

En este artículo comenzamos la historia de Supertramp, un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en 1969 por el músico Rick Davies. Supertramp ha sido una de las bandas más influyentes de la escena musical mundial de los setenta y ochenta del siglo XX.  La primera formación de Supertramp, integrada por Davies, Roger Hodgson, Richard Palmer y Robert Millar, publicó un álbum homónimo con las características del rock progresivo de escaso éxito comercial, al que dedicaremos este artículo.

La banda fue inicialmente un grupo de rock progresivo de pleno derecho, pero a partir de su tercer álbum Crime of the Century (1974), comenzaron a moverse hacia un sonido más orientado al pop.

Antecedentes

En 1969, Stanley 'Sam' August Miesegaes, un millonario neerlandés, dejó de apoyar económicamente a una banda llamada The Joint debido a su decepción con ellos. Sin embargo, ofreció a Rick Davies, miembro del grupo y de quien sentía que su talento se había visto «empantanado» en The Joint, una oportunidad para formar su propia banda, de nuevo con su respaldo financiero.9 Después de colocar un anuncio en el semanario musical Melody Maker, Davies formó una banda con Roger Hodgson (bajo y voz), Richard Palmer-James (guitarras) y Keith Baker (percusión).

Davies y Hodgson tenían orígenes e inspiraciones musicales radicalmente diferentes: Davies tenía un origen humilde y sus principales influencias musicales eran el blues y el jazz, mientras que Hodgson había comenzado a trabajar en la industria musical y era aficionado al pop y a la música psicodélica. A pesar de ello, comenzaron a escribir canciones juntos, con Palmer como tercer miembro del equipo compositivo.​ Dado que ningún otro miembro de la banda se mostró dispuesto, Palmer escribió todas las letras.

El grupo se denominó inicialmente como Daddy.  Después de varios meses ensayando en una casa de campo de West Hythe, la banda viajó a Múnich para ofrecer una serie de conciertos en el P.N. Club.​ Una actuación de diez minutos de la canción "All Along The Watchtower" fue filmada por Haro Senft, un cineasta alemán, durante un concierto el 14 de diciembre de 1969.

De una entrevista con Richard W. Palmer-James (miembro fundador de Supertramp) por Ingeborg Schober (Sounds, Süddeutsche Zeitung): "Éramos una banda con ideas musicalmente distintas y una sólida formación musical. Éramos pobres y desconocidos. El interés de un cineasta alemán en una de nuestras apariciones en el club en Alemania fue como un signo del zodiaco para nosotros. El cortometraje "Supertramp Portrait 1970" sigue siendo el mejor documento cinematográfico que existe de nosotros. En particular, le doy mucho crédito al cineasta por rechazar todas las ofertas estadounidenses para comercializar esta película sobre la base de que su película es un documento cinematográfico y no un trabajo promocional". 

Los ensayos fueron poco productivos, y su repertorio inicial consistía en solo cuatro canciones, dos de ellas versiones de otros artistas. Para evitar confusiones con la banda Daddy Longlegs, el grupo cambió su nombre por el de Supertramp en enero de 1970, un apodo inspirado en el libro de W. H. Davies Autobiografía de un súper vagabundo (The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp).

Baker se fue en enero de 1970 y fue reemplazado en febrero por Robert Millar, un ex-actor teatral.

En abril de 1970, Supertramp, de vuelta en Munich, devolvió el favor a su amigo Haro Senft al contribuir con música a su próxima película, Fegefeuer (también conocida como Purgatory), y también aceptaría que las canciones de su primer álbum se usaran en un documental, Extremes (1971), de Tony Klinger y Michael Lytton.

Grabación del álbum

Supertramp fue uno de los primeros grupos en firmar con la rama británica de A&M Records. La grabación de su primer álbum se realizó durante el mes de junio de 1970 en los Morgan Sound Studios. 

La música de todas las canciones de Supertramp fue escrita por Rick Davies y Roger Hodgson, mientras que las letras eran de Richard Palmer. Según reconoció el propio Palmer, escribir letras de canciones era «como hacer los deberes de la escuela».

El álbum fue grabado en su totalidad durante sesiones de grabación nocturnas entre las 12:00 de la noche y las 6:00 de la mañana debido a la superstición que la banda tenía sobre la «magia» que suponía grabar de noche, después de oír que bandas como Traffic y Spooky Tooth lo hacían de noche. Hodgson comentó al respecto: «Invariablemente, nuestro ingeniero, Robin Black, se quedaba dormido a mitad de las sesiones, que eran bastante intensas, porque luchamos con Richard Palmer». Hodgson se mostró agradado por el álbum resultante, aunque, sin embargo, una década más tarde comentó: «Fue muy inocente, pero tiene un buen ambiente».

Es el único álbum de Supertramp que no cuenta con un saxofonista.

Los temas del álbum no fueron interpretadas en directo, con la excepción de «Home Again» y «Surely», que fueron interpretadas ocasionalmente durante varios años. Adjunto un enlace de un concierto de la gira de su segundo álbum Indelibly Stamped el  3-4-1972 en Berna, Suiza.

Solo «Surely» fue incluido en el recopilatorio Retrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology.

Varias canciones del álbum, incluyendo «Words Unspoken» y «I Am Not Like Other Birds of Prey», fueron utilizadas como parte de la banda sonora del largometraje Extremes, junto a música de otros grupos.

Lanzamiento y recepción

El álbum fue lanzado el 14 de julio de 1970 en el Reino Unido y Canadá. No llegó a las listas.

El álbum no fue publicado en los Estados Unidos hasta 1977, aunque estuvo disponible a través de tiendas de discos especializadas en importaciones británicas. La edición de 1977 alcanzó el puesto 158 en la lista estadounidense Billboard 200.​

Estilísticamente, el álbum incluyó rock progresivo característico de la época y un sonido similar al del grupo Cressida. A pesar de obtener buenas reseñas, el álbum no atrajo a una gran audiencia. 

En Canadá, lograron que el álbum fuera certificado oro (40.000 unidades vendidas).

Al no tener un nombre especifico es conocido con los nombres Now and Then, Surely o And I'm Not Like Other con los que se lanzaron algunas ediciones del álbum.

La respuesta crítica al álbum fue generalmente positiva, con una reseña de Judith Simons en Daily Express diciendo: «Este álbum debut de un grupo de músicos-poetas prometedores es más melódico que la mayoría de los discos que pasan bajo la etiqueta de rock progresivo». A pesar de ello, fue un fracaso comercial.

En una reseña retrospectiva, Allmusic comentó que el álbum «está inundado con serpenteantes y pretenciosos instrumentales, con mayor énfasis y atención concedida a los teclados y a las guitarras con respecto a la escritura y a la emanación total de la música». Sin embargo, también añadió que «la mezcla de ardor y sutileza es atractiva».

Es un diamante en bruto, una joya olvidada del rock progresivo. A mi me sorprendió bastante para ser su primer álbum.
