Introducción

En un anterior artículo comenzamos la historia de Supertramp, un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en 1969 por el músico Rick Davies. Supertramp ha sido una de las bandas más influyentes de la escena musical mundial de los setenta y ochenta del siglo XX.  La primera formación de Supertramp, integrada por Davies, Roger Hodgson, Richard Palmer y Robert Millar, publicó un álbum homónimo con las características del rock progresivo de escaso éxito comercial, al que dedicamos dicho artículo.

En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación de su segundo álbum Indelibly Stamped.

Antecedentes

Dave Winthrop (flauta y saxofón) se unió al grupo tras el lanzamiento del primer disco en julio de 1970, y poco después, el 27 de agosto, Supertramp tocó en el Festival de la Isla de Wight. La formación continuó cambiando en los seis meses siguientes a la publicación del álbum: Palmer abandonó el grupo debido a conflictos personales con Davies y Hodgson, seguido de Millar, quien sufrió una crisis nerviosa después de una gira por Noruega. Palmer, como Richard Palmer-James, pasó a trabajar como letrista para King Crimson. Palmer fue reemplazado por el ex guitarrista de The Nice David O'List, quien solo duró un concierto.

Grabación del álbum

Roger Hodgson definió Indelibly Stamped como «el álbum de supervivencia para ponernos en las manos de nuestro representante. No había ningún tema trabajado para el álbum y estábamos flojeando». Kevin Currie (percusión) y Frank Farrell (bajo, teclados, coros) fueron reclutados para el grupo poco antes de comenzar las sesiones de grabación. Hodgson cambió a la guitarra y Davies sirvió como segundo cantante principal. Con la partida de Palmer, Hodgson y Davies escribieron y compusieron por separado para este y los álbumes posteriores de la banda.

Formación de Supertramp para su segundo álbum

El álbum fue grabado entre abril y mayo de 1971 en los Olympic Studios, Londres. El álbum marcó un cambio drástico en la dirección musical del grupo hacia un sonido rock más convencional. 

La canción «Times Have Changed» evolucionó a partir de una canción llamada «Times of Rain», que fue compuesta por Richard Palmer-James mientras era miembro del grupo. Rick Davies y Hodgson escribieron una nueva letra para la canción, que fue rebautizada como «Times Have Changed».

El grupo comenzó una gira de promoción del álbum con una serie de conciertos en el P.N. Club de Munich, Alemania, el lugar donde el grupo ofreció sus primeros conciertos. Davies describió los conciertos en esa época como «realmente rock and roll. Estábamos acostumbrados a que la gente se subiera al escenario y era caótico, esperando que hiciéramos tres bises, pero había carne y patatas detrás del escenario. Más o menos la misma gente venía al siguiente concierto».

Lanzamiento y recepción

El álbum fue lanzado el 25 de junio de 1971 en el Reino Unido. No llegó a las listas. Al igual que su álbum debut, el disco supuso un fracaso comercial, aunque con los años fue certificado como disco de oro en Canadá y Francia. Solo entró en la lista de discos más vendidos de Australia, donde llegó al puesto 53.

La portada de Indelibly Stamped representa el torso y los brazos tatuados de una mujer desnuda. Comúnmente se cree que la modelo era Rusty Skuse, en gran parte debido a un tatuaje en el brazo izquierdo con los nombres «Bill» y «Rusty». Sin embargo, una comparación entre la portada del álbum y las fotografías de los tatuajes de Skuse mostraron que no era la modelo. Según Paul Sayce, en un artículo para Tattoo News, la modelo era Marion Hollier, que fue tatuada en Les Skuse Tattoo Studio en la década de 1960. Un artículo publicado en The People poco después de la publicación del álbum también identificó a Hollier como la modelo, quien señaló que le habían pagado 45 libras por el trabajo. Las ediciones originales tienen una portada plegable a color y texto diferente para el nombre de la banda y el título del álbum.

Este es el primer álbum de Supertramp publicado en los Estados Unidos; la portada era de color (en 1971), pero A&M pegó dos estrellas doradas sobre los pezones. Se publicó en septiembre de 1971.

En España no se publicó hasta 1977.

En una breve reseña retrospectiva, Stephen Thomas Erlewine escribió para Allmusic que Indelibly Stamped era una mejora con respecto al álbum debut del grupo, pero que eran aun indulgentes con secciones instrumentales muy largas.

Las bajas ventas del álbum provocó que todos los miembros, a excepción de Davies y Hodgson, abandonaran el grupo, y que Miesegaes les retirase su apoyo financiero en octubre de 1972.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum: 

El álbum es otra joya olvidada. En él, Supertramp se aleja del sonido de rock progresivo, quedando alguna traza. Hay algunos temas que recuerdan el pop que desarrollarán en el futuro y hay que salen de lo normal como un rock&roll.
