Introducción

En un anterior artículo comenzamos la historia de Gentle Giant, un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en 1970 y activo hasta 1980. Gentle Giant ha sido una de las bandas más originales y eclécticas de los años setenta y del siglo XX. La banda era conocida por la complejidad y sofisticación de su música y por las variadas habilidades musicales de sus miembros. Todos los miembros de la banda eran multi-instrumentistas. El nombre Gentle Giant —gigante amable en español— se debe a la figura de Robert Wadlow, el hombre más alto registrado en la historia (medía 2.72 metros). Según dichos de sus miembros, el objetivo de la banda era expandir las fronteras de la música popular contemporánea a riesgo de tornarse sumamente impopulares. Esa afirmación cambiaría a lo largo del tiempo. 

Aunque no consiguieron el éxito comercial de otras bandas coetáneas de rock progresivo como Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes y Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant fue considerada una de las más experimentales en los años setenta y, por extensión, del género y consiguieron un nutrido grupo de fans.

La música de Gentle Giant fue considerada compleja incluso por los estándares del rock progresivo, basándose en una amplia franja de música que incluye folk, soul, jazz y música clásica. A diferencia de muchos de sus contemporáneos del rock progresivo, sus influencias "clásicas" iban más allá de lo romántico e incorporaban elementos de música de cámara medievales, barrocos y modernistas. La banda también tenía un gusto por los temas amplios para sus letras, inspirándose no solo en experiencias personales sino también en la filosofía y las obras de François Rabelais y R. D. Laing. En 2015 fueron reconocidos con el premio a la trayectoria en los Progressive Music Awards.

El primer álbum de la banda fue el homónimo Gentle Giant lanzado el 27 de noviembre de 1970. En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación de su segundo álbum Acquiring the Taste.

La grabación se realizó en los siguientes estudios entre enero y abril de 1971:

• Advision Studios – (Ingenieros: Martin Rushent, Big A & Garybaldi)
• A.I.R. Studios, Londres – (Ingeniero: Bill Price)

El segundo álbum de Gentle Giant fue una desviación de las influencias de blues y soul encontradas en su álbum debut: instrumentación más experimental, más disonante e incluso más diversa. Este segundo álbum  fue moldeado principalmente por la amplia formación de música clásica y contemporánea de Kerry Minnear. También mostró a la banda expandiendo su ya impresionante paleta instrumental (aunque muchos años más tarde Derek Shulman admitiría que "grabamos[el álbum]sin ninguna idea de cómo sería antes de entrar en el estudio. Fue un álbum muy experimental y todavía no teníamos una dirección definitiva". El álbum representa una gran mejora en cuanto a arreglos y producción con respecto al álbum de debut.

El sentido de desafío de la banda se hizo evidente en las notas de la carpeta del disco que contenían una declaración de intenciones particularmente elevada incluso para los estándares del rock progresivo. El productor Tony Visconti ha reclamado la autoría de estas notas:

Adquirir el sabor es la segunda fase del placer sensorial. Si te has atiborrado de nuestro primer álbum, entonces disfruta de los sabores más finos (esperamos) de esta, nuestra segunda oferta.

Nuestro objetivo es expandir las fronteras de la música contemporánea a riesgo de ser muy impopular. hemos grabado cada composición con el único pensamiento: que debe ser única, aventurera y fascinante. Se ha necesitado cada pizca de nuestro conocimiento musical y técnico combinado para lograr esto. 

Desde el principio hemos abandonado todos los pensamientos preconcebidos sobre el mercantilismo descarado. En cambio, esperamos darle algo mucho más sustancial y satisfactorio. Todo lo que necesitas hacer es sentarte y adquirir el sabor.

La canción "La Natividad de Pantagruel" está inspirada en los libros de Gargantúa y Pantagruel de François Rabelais.

Con 39 minutos y 26 segundos, es el álbum de estudio más largo que el grupo haya lanzado.

Lanzamiento y recepción

 El álbum fue publicado el 16 de julio de 1971. No llegó a las listas pero le sirvió para ganar adeptos. Es considerado como uno de los mejores álbumes de la banda por sus fanes.

Tras la publicación, Martin Smith dejó la banda, aparentemente debido a desacuerdos con Ray y Phil Shulman. Fue reemplazado por Malcolm Mortimore.

La portada del álbum parece insinuar una lengua lamiendo un culo. Sin embargo, cuando se abre por completo, en realidad es una lengua lamiendo un melocotón. En 2005, apareció en la lista de Pitchfork de "The Worst Record Covers of All Time" (Las peores portadas de todos los tiempos).

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum: 

Se nota que son músicos experimentados y con formación clásica. Me gusta un poco menos que el anterior por ser un poco experimental.
