Introducción

En un anterior artículo comentamos el tercer álbum de Barclay James Harvest, Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories, publicado a principios de noviembre de 1971. Aunque el tercer álbum no ha sido tan valorado como el anterior Once Again, incluye temas como After the Day o Medicine Man, que forman parte del repertorio clásico de BJH. Como el álbum anterior no llegó a las listas y las ventas no acompañaron.

Barclay James Harvest es un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en Oldham en septiembre de 1969 por el bajista / vocalista Les Holroyd (n. 1948), el guitarrista / vocalista John Lees (n. 1947), el baterista / percusionista Mel Pritchard (1948-2004), y el tecladista / vocalista Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (1947-2010).

Actualmente el grupo está en activo, pero con otros nombres desde 1999 llamados: Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd y John Lees' Barclay James Harvest.

En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación de su cuarto álbum de estudio Baby James Harvest. Las presiones de las giras que no obtenían los resultados esperados comenzaban a afectar a la banda. Esto desembocó que este fuera el último álbum con Harvest, cambiaran de manager a Harvey Lisberg y firmaron con Polydor.

El álbum recopilatorio Early Morning Onwards

El 28 abril de 1972 BJH publicó en el Reino Unido con Harvest el sencillo I'm Over You / Child Of Man que serviría de adelanto del que sería su primer álbum recopilatorio Early Morning Onwards. El sencillo no llego a las listas. Los temas también se incluirían como bonus tracks en la reedición en CD del álbum Baby James Harvest.

Mi opinión: tema un poco más rockero, pero sin mucha chispa.

En septiembre de 1972 se publica con Starline (un sello asociado a EMI/Columbia) el que sería el primer recopilatorio de BJH titulado Early Morning Onwards. Como temas nuevos contiene los dos del sencillo citado anteriormente. Como temas conocidos tiene las caras A y B de sus dos primeros sencillos que hasta la fecha no habían sido recogidos en un álbum, Mocking Bird del álbum Once Again y dos temas del álbum Barclay James Harvest And Other Short Stories.

El álbum Baby James Harvest

Su último y cuarto álbum con EMI fue Baby James Harvest. Fue grabado en los Strawberry Studios de Stockport con excepción de Moonwater que se grabó en los Abbey Road Studios de Londres en septiembre de 1972. Este álbum iba a llamarse Four Wings e iba a tener formato de doble álbum, dedicando una cara de disco a las composiciones de cada uno de los miembros del grupo. Finalmente quisieron quitarse cuanto antes el compromiso que tenían con EMI para cambiar de sello.

Se utilizó la orquesta sinfónica Barclay James Harvest de 60 músicos dirigida por Martyn Ford solo en la grabación del tema Moonwater supongo para ahorrar costes, ya que estaban en una situación crítica. En el tema Delph Town Morn se usó una sección de metales arreglada y dirigida por Brian Day.

Las pistas son generalmente más largas que las de álbumes anteriores, lo que permite a la banda desarrollarlas un poco más.

Aunque el cuarto álbum no ha sido tan valorado como los anteriores incluye el tema Summer Soldier, que forma parte del repertorio clásico de BJH.

El álbum fue publicado el 10 de noviembre de 1972 en el Reino Unido. Como el álbum anterior no llegó a las listas y las ventas no acompañaron. La portada diseñada por Ian Cassie con fotografías de Julian Cottrell mantiene el tono austero de las anteriores con una fotografía de un bebé metido en una maceta. En la contraportada se muestra una fotografía de cada componente de la banda en blanco y negro y una mariposa multicolor como símbolo del grupo. No incluyó carpeta desplegable para economizar.

El álbum recibió una valoración de 4 estrellas y media de cinco de AllMusic.

Baby James Harvest fue remasterizado y reeditado por Harvest en 2002 con varios bonus tracks.

No se dispuso de material oficial grabado de los temas en directo de esta época con orquesta hasta la publicación, en el año 2002, de BBC In Concert 1972.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum: 

Es un álbum de escucha agradable y relajante. La primera vez que escuché a Barclay James Harvest me gustó mucho su música y sin que nadie me lo recomendará. Aunque se nota la precipitación por quitarse este álbum de encima para terminar con EMI, los temas son más largos y mejor trabajados y algo más progresivos.
