1970: Kevin Ayers y el mundo entero incluido Mike Oldfield En un anterior artículo comentamos que Kevin Ayers, a principios de 1970, reunió a una banda a la que llamó The Whole World (El Mundo Entero) para hacer una gira de su reciente álbum debut Joy of a Toy que incluía a un joven Mike Oldfield. Después de una gira por el Reino Unido, Ayers llevó a Whole World al estudio para grabar el álbum Shooting at the Moon, que fue producido, como el anterior, con Peter Jenner. El álbum fue publicado en octubre de 1970.

fue una banda errática que no se adaptaba bien al directo, y Ayers tampoco se sentía capaz de soportar el ritmo de vida de las grandes giras. La banda se separó tras una breve gira, sin resentimientos, y álbum incluyendo a Mike Oldfield.

En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación de su siguiente álbum Bananamour.
El sencillo Caribbean Moon
Después de Whatevershebringswesing, Ayers reunió una nueva banda formada por el baterista Eddie Sparrow y el bajista Archie Legget y empleó un lirismo más directo.
Eddie Sparrow
Archie tocó con todos los grandes durante su carrera, siendo el bajista preferido por los mejores artistas estadounidenses de R&B que giran por el Reino Unido. En esta nueva formación no participaría por el momento Mike Oldfield, el cual estaba bastante ocupado con la preparación de Tubular Bells.
El 19 de abril de 1973 lanzó el sencillo Caribbean Moon con el tema Take Me To Tahiti como cara B. Inicialmente ambos temas no se incluyeron en el álbum que estaba a punto de publicar Bananamour pero si aparecerían como bonus tracks en la reedición en CD de 2003. Ambas se incluyeron regularmente en su repertorio en vivo por aquella época. Hicieron un video promocional con mucho humor. Se puede considerar el video más gay en la historia del rock progresivo hasta ese momento. Eso no quiere decir que lo fuera Ayers, era simplemente su sentido del humor.

El álbum Bananamour
Con su nueva banda grabó su siguiente y cuarto álbum Bananamour en los estudios Abbey Road entre septiembre-octubre de 1972. Contó como músicos invitados a sus amigos y excompañeros Steve Hillage, Mike Ratledge y Robert Wyatt. Como hemos comentado Mike Oldfield no colaboró en este caso por estar ocupado con Tubular Bells.
El álbum fue publicado en mayo de 1973 con Harvest, siendo el último álbum de esta primera etapa con este sello. Volvería a publicar con ellos más adelante.

Inicialmente el álbum fue publicado en una carpeta desplegable. En su interior presenta a Kevin y Archie, vestidos con esmóquines, jugando un juego inusual de ajedrez en presencia de dos caballeros mayores.

Bananamour contó con algunas de sus grabaciones más accesibles, incluyendo "Shouting in a Bucket Blues" y su caprichoso tributo a Syd Barrett, "Oh! Wot A Dream".

El álbum Bananamour evolucionó a partir de las actuaciones en vivo de la revista Banana Follies de Kevin y Archie.
El ex colega de Soft Machine, Mike Ratledge, contribuye con teclados a la canción Interview y David Bedford de su anterior banda The Whole World arregló Beware Of The Dog. Las voces adicionales de las mejores cantantes femeninas Liza Strike, Doris Troy y Barry St. John agregan drama sensual al álbum, especialmente en la canción When Your Parents Go To Sleep cantada excepcionalmente por Archie.

La pieza central del álbum es "Decadence", inspirada en la fascinación de Kevin por la cantante alemana Nico, quien había encontrado la fama con la Velvet Underground de Andy Warhol durante la década de 1960. Esta pista es un festín caleidoscópico arremolinado de sonidos musicales y poesía pura: "Mírala ahí fuera en exhibición / Bailando a su manera somnolienta / Mientras todas sus visiones comienzan a sonar / En los carámbanos de nuestra decadencia / Y a lo largo de la orilla del desierto / Ella vaga más lejos cada vez / Lo único que queda por intentar / Ella dice que para vivir tengo que morir".

En 2003 se publicó una edición en CD con bonus tracks en la que se incluía una versión preliminar de Decadence.

La canción fue versionada más tarde por la banda australiana de rock psicodélico The Church en su álbum de 1999 A Box of Birds.

La canción Oh! Wot A Dream fue publicada como sencillo en noviembre de 1972 sirviendo como adelanto del álbum. Incluía en la cara B el tema Connie On A Rubber Band que no se incluyó en el álbum pero que más tarde se incluiría en la recopilación de 1976 Odd Ditties. También aparecería como bonus track en la edición de 2003.
