Fruupp fue una banda de rock progresivo de la década de 1970, que se originó en Belfast, Irlanda del Norte, en 1971 pero que desarrolló un nutrido grupo de fans en Gran Bretaña. Fueron relativamente populares, particularmente en la escena estudiantil y como teloneros para bandas como Genesis, Queen y King Crimson.
El guitarrista, cantante y escritor irlandés Vince McCusker había pasado algunos meses en Londres para encontrar músicos para sus ideas musicales. Decepcionado regresó a Belfast y para buscar músicos para tocar su material. Así consiguió reunir a músicos con una amplia formación clásica: Stephen Houston (teclados y oboe), Peter Farrelly (bajo y voz principal) y Martin Foye (batería y percusión).
Se llamaban a sí mismos FRUUPP, el nombre está sacado de una hoja de Letraset (hoja con letras adhesivas para formar títulos), en la que se habían utilizado todas las letras con la excepción de F, R, U, P, la banda agregó una U y una P. Ellos mismos se reían del nombre diciendo que era difícil de deletrear, no significaba nada e imposible de pronunciar en todos los idiomas, en particular si lo hacías con acento del Ulster.

Tocaron su primer concierto en el Ulster Hall de Belfast el 23 de junio de 1971 como teloneros de Rory Gallagher. Fueron a Londres en una furgoneta Ford Transit que habían comprado con la idea de tocar algunos conciertos gratis y ser descubiertos por algún manager o compañía de discos.

Después de dos años de actuación, grabaron una cinta demo con cuatro de sus canciones el 29 de marzo de 1973 en un pequeño estudio en Fulham Palace Road, con la que consiguieron firmar para el sello de música underground y rock progresivo Dawn Records perteneciente a Pye Records en agosto de 1973.

A pesar de haber tocado cientos de conciertos en el Reino Unido y Europa continental entre 1973 y 1975, no lanzaron ninguna producción en vivo, aunque existen grabaciones pirata de la audiencia de espectáculos en vivo en Inglaterra e Irlanda. Adjunto un ejemplo:

En este artículo nos ocupamos de su cuarto y último álbum, Modern Masquerades.
Grabación
En enero de 1975, el tecladista Stephen Houston, miembro fundador, dejó la banda y se convirtió en clérigo cristiano. Mientras le encontraban sustituto siguieron como un trio. Tuvieron que tocar en un espectáculo con entradas agotadas en Farnborough Tech College el sábado 1 de febrero de 1975 con la presencia del Seymour Stein, el jefe de Sire Records en Nueva York con el que tenían la esperanza de fichar. Con la falta de Houston el concierto no les salió muy bien, por lo que perdieron esa oportunidad tan importante de hacerse internacionales.

Modern Masquerades, el cuarto álbum de la banda, se convertiría en el único sin Houston, el cual fue sustituido por John Mason. Mason hizo su primera aparición en Huddersfield el 14 de marzo.
El álbum fue grabado de agosto a septiembre de 1975 en los Island Studios de Londres, fue producido por el músico multi-instrumental Ian McDonald, mejor conocido como miembro fundador de King Crimson and Foreigner. Además del papel de producción, McDonald también tocó el saxofón alto y la percusión.

El sencillo
El álbum fue precedido por el lanzamiento del sencillo Janet Planet / Why el 24 de octubre de 1975. Ambos temas se incluirán en el álbum. Solo se publicó en Irlanda.
El sencillo no se vendió bien ni obtuvo mucha difusión en las emisoras de radio.
Lanzamiento del álbum
El álbum fue lanzado el 14 de noviembre de 1975 en el Reino Unido con el sello Dawn Records, una subsidiaria de Pye Records para la música underground y rock progresivo.
El álbum al igual que el sencillo no tuvo buenas ventas.

Reediciones
Fue publicado por primera vez en CD en 1989 en Japón. Fue publicado remasterizado en Japón en 1999. En 2009 fue publicado remasterizado en CD en Europa. En 2021 fue reeditado en vinilo en Francia por el sello Long Hair.

Opinión personal
Se les ha llegado a comparar con Genesis. Es verdad que en sus actuaciones usaban una teatralidad semejante a ellos, pero su rock sinfónico es más melódico y mas jazzístico que Genesis. En ciertos momentos me recuerda más a Camel que a Genesis. El álbum abre con Misty Morning con un buen arreglo instrumental y letras animadas. De Masquerading With Dawn a destacar los teclados. La larga Gormenghast es el punto culminante del álbum. El álbum cierra con la encantadora Sheba Song.

Legado
El artista estadounidense de hip-hop Talib Kweli usó "Sheba's Song" como base para su canción "Soon the New Day" del álbum Eardrum (2007) que alcanzó el número 2 en la lista Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos.
La gira
La banda promocionó el álbum con una gira de dos meses que comenzó en Hastings el 5 de diciembre de 1975 y terminó en Manchester el 2 de febrero de 1976.

Un concierto en el club Friars Aylesbury el 6 de diciembre de 1975 fue grabado usando una unidad móvil para un posible álbum Live at Friars Aylesbury, pero las cintas maestras fueron destruidas más tarde por el fuego en un apartamento que los músicos compartían en Peckham, Londres. Finalmente en 2022 se encontraron una copia de las cintas y se pudo lanzar el álbum en doble LP y doble CD el 1 de septiembre de 1922, pero se tituló Masquerading With Dawn. La versión en vinilo presentaba uno de color amarillo y otro naranja.

Separación
Aunque la banda estaba trabajando en el hubiera sido su quinto álbum Doctor Wilde's Twilight Adventure en 1976, las bajas ventas de discos junto con el advenimiento del movimiento punk / new wave causaron que Fruupp se separara a finales de año.
