En este artículo traemos los comienzos y primer álbum de la banda alemana de krautrock, Birth Control.
La característica de su música son las piezas largas y los interludios solistas de los instrumentos individuales, especialmente los solos de batería. Es conocida por su sonido de hard rock progresivo y portadas de álbumes provocativos (como la de Two Eggs – Two Concerts que representa a una gallina cocinando huevos).
Comienzos
Birth Control se formó en agosto de 1966 a partir de dos bandas de Berlín, The Earls and the Gents. En algunas fuentes se cita que se formó en 1968 pero es erróneo. Egon Balder de los Earls y el guitarrista de los Gents, Manfred Schweiger, confirmaron que es correcta la fecha de 1966.
Los miembros fundadores fueron Bernd Koschmidder (bajo), Reinhold Sobotta (órgano), Rolf Gurra (saxofón, voz), Fritz "Little Lord" Gröger (voz), Klaus Orso (guitarra), Reiner Borchert (guitarra) y Hugo Egon Balder (batería). A finales de la década de 1960, el control de la natalidad era un tema muy discutido debido a la encíclica papal Humanae Vitae. Los miembros de la banda escucharon la expresión inglesa Birth Control en la estación de radio AFN y decidieron convertirlo en el nombre de su banda.
Es cierto que fundé Birth Control junto con Koschmidder. Y justo después de nuestro viaje a Inglaterra. Sin embargo, fue en 1966, no 68. En 1967 actúabamos casi todos los fines de semana en el Heide de Luneburgo y en el Top Ten en Hamburgo. En el Heide conocimos a Gröger, que estaba contratado como solista y luego se quedó con nosotros. Para ser justos, he enfatizado en cada entrevista que la banda no tuvo éxito hasta que yo me fui. El delegado de mi clase, Manfred Gillig, fue el que me sugirió el nombre de la banda, hoy se hace llamar Manfred Gillig-Degrave y es editor en jefe del "Musikwoche". Koschi y yo hicimos el viaje a Inglaterra después de la disolución de los Earls y desde que conocimos la movida de Londres, nuestro deseo fue formar una banda más grande. Birth Control inicialmente se hizo popular como una banda de versiones, principalmente con canciones de Julie Driscoll. En ese momento, ninguno de los siete fundadores de la banda pensaba en producciones discográficas o carreras. La banda actuaba casi a diario en clubes de Berlín y rápidamente se hizo conocida en la región.

Gira por el Líbano
La banda fue invitada a una serie de actuaciones durante tres meses en un club nocturno de Beirut a principios de 1969. Orso dejó la banda para estudiar derecho y ahora es abogado en Berlín.
Un grave accidente de tráfico, en el que Koschmidder y Balder estuvieron involucrados, casi obliga a cancelar la gira por Líbano: los padres de Balder le prohibieron seguir tocando en la banda y así de repente se encontraron sin baterista. Balder más tarde se convirtió en un conocido presentador y productor en la televisión privada.
En retrospectiva dio la feliz coincidencia de que Bernd "Nossi" Noske se unió a la banda y sustituyó a Balder en la batería por lo que la gira por el Líbano se salvó.
En enero fueron en barco al Líbano. Durante casi 3 meses, la banda tocó en el club nocturno "Les Caves du Roy" en el Hotel Excelsior de Beirut. Una noche, el cantante francés Ricky Shayne subió al escenario.

Algunos de ustedes probablemente han oído hablar de Little Lord, el cantante beat más pequeño de Alemania. ¡Ese soy yo! En este momento estoy actuando en Beirut con mi banda "Birth Control". El club donde tocamos se llama "Les Caves du Roy". Muchos artistas famosos vienen aquí. Una noche vimos a Ricky Shayne entre los invitados. Le pedimos que cantara un interludio, lo cual hizo. Ricky está de vacaciones de cinco semanas en Beirut. Incluso nos consiguió una aparición en la televisión libanesa, porque nos pidió que lo acompañáramos musicalmente durante su aparición en televisión. Ricky no tiene aires de celebridad. A finales de marzo de 1969 la banda (sólo quedaban cinco) regresó a Berlín. El guitarrista Borchert se quedó en el Líbano y fue sustituido por Bruno Frenzel. Después de que Fritz Gröger también se fuera a finales del verano, la banda comenzó a grabar sus primeras piezas propias buscando su sonido distintivo. La banda luego realizó una gira por Alemania.

Aunque la banda fue encuadrada inicialmente en el movimiento krautrock que agrupaba muchos estilos musicales, a ellos no les gustaba el calificativo. Están de acuerdo si se considera al krautrock como una época en la que emergieron muchas bandas, pero por el estilo podríamos hablar de rock duro progresivo.
Primer sencillo
En el otoño de 1969, su primer sencillo producido en Viena fue lanzado con el sello Amadeo en Austria conteniendo los temas October / Freedom.
Grabación
A finales de 1969 se fue de la banda Rolf Gurra por lo que no participaría en la grabación del primer álbum que se realizó en los Audio Studios de Berlín con el ingeniero de sonido Jürgen Wentorff. La producción corrió a cargo de Didi Zill y Peter Meisel. Didi Zill colaboró también en el diseño de la funda y realizó las fotografías.
Lanzamiento
El álbum debut titulado homónimamente fue lanzado en 1970 con Metronome en Alemania (MLP 15 366). En Estados Unidos fue lanzado con Prophesy Records (PRS 1002). En 1971 fue lanzado en Italia con Jolly (LPJ 5177).
La funda tenía un diseño muy particular: era redonda con forma de pastillero de píldoras anticonceptivas. Su diseño corrió a cargo de Hans Rosema.

La banda empezó a ser conocida en los círculos underground.

Fue reeditado en 1976 en Alemania con una portada diferente y con el título Gold Rock, con el que se conoce al álbum a partir de entonces. Con esa portada fue publicado en 1978 en Japón.

Fue publicado en CD por primera vez en Europa en 1997. Incluía como bonus tracks los dos temas de su primer sencillo, una versión en mono del tema Drugs del álbum que se publicó en sencillo y el tema All I Want Is You que fue cara B de dicho sencillo.
En 2010 se reeditó en vinilo en Alemania manteniendo la funda original.
Opinión personal
El álbum está bien para su época. Se puede tildar de rock psicodélico o rock duro, pero no progresivo (sería proto-prog) ni krautrock. El tema que más me gusta es el primero del álbum, No Drugs, por su comienzo con las guitarras. Luego vendrán álbumes mejores de la banda.
