En este artículo traemos el quinto álbum de la banda alemana de krautrock, Birth Control.
La característica de su música son las piezas largas y los interludios solistas de los instrumentos individuales, especialmente los solos de batería. Es conocida por su sonido de hard rock progresivo y portadas de álbumes provocativos (como la de Two Eggs – Two Concerts que representa a una gallina cocinando huevos).

Dirk Steffens dejó Birth Control en enero de 1974 (en 1976 lanzaría en solitario el álbum de rock duro, The Seventh Step).

Gira y álbum en vivo
Birth Control tuvo que actuar nuevamente como cuarteto para la gira alemana en la primavera de 1974. Actuando como productor, Dieter Dierks, las actuaciones de Friburgo, Attendorn y Dorsten que tuvieron lugar durante el mes de junio de 1974 fueron grabadas con el estudio móvil Recordomobile y mezcladas en los Dierks Studios, Stommeln, en agosto.
La grabación fue lanzada en el otoño de 1974 como un álbum doble "en vivo" que según la revista POP documenta un "rock conmovedor".

Después de una gira de seis semanas por Alemania en septiembre de 1974, actuaron en el Palais des Sports de París el 28 de octubre. Para los lectores de Musik Express, Birth Control fue la mejor banda en vivo del año.
Gira de 1975 y sencillo Gamma Ray
En marzo de 1975 realizó una gira por Alemania que según la revista Bravo "la banda fue acogida con entusiasmo por su rock pesado, duro y ruidoso". En el verano de 1975, el cuarteto realizó una gira por España durante dos meses (¡30 conciertos!) con gran éxito. La gran atención de la banda que despertó allí (22.000 espectadores solo en San Sebastián) llevó a CBS a lanzar un single del LP "Hoodoo Man". "Gamma Ray Part 1+2" fue lanzado por primera vez en España. La portada mostró la banda en vivo en el escenario.
La edición alemana del sencillo fue lanzada con la misma portada que el LP "Plastic People". Una 3ª versión del sencillo fue lanzada en Portugal con distinta portada.

Grabación del quinto álbum
El álbum que se titularía Plastic People fue grabado en el estudio Dierks de Colonia en mayo de 1975 por el ingeniero Toby Robinson. La mezcla y retoques finales se realizaron en el Air Studios de Londres en junio de 1975 por los ingenieros Denim Bridges y Toby Robinson con la asistencia de Benjamin Emrys Roberts.

Lanzamiento del quinto álbum
El álbum fue lanzado en otoño de 1975 con CBS tan solo en Alemania y España (CBS 80921). Sería su último álbum con CBS. Birth Control volvió a Metronome y firmó un contrato para 4 LP's con el sello Brain.

El diseño de la portada fue de Dieter Fischer con un dibujo de Peter Lorenz y fotografías de Fotofix y Hans Kirmer. El álbum fue publicado inicialmente con una carpeta desplegable.

En la gira por Alemania en otoño de 1975, presentaron su nuevo álbum "Plastic People", en el que buscaron el camino desde conocidos riffs de rock pesado hasta collages sonoros más sofisticados (y complicados). El tema de este álbum que se volvió un clásico fue "Trial Trip", que en la versión actual con Peter Engelhardt a la guitarra es uno de los más destacados de cada concierto.
Como teloneros de Blue Öyster Cult, actuaron en cuatro ciudades inglesas en noviembre de 1975. Los lectores de la revista alemana MUSIKMARKT votaron a Birth Control como el tercer mejor grupo alemán detrás de Silver Convention y Kraftwerk.
En septiembre de 1975, un grupo de 23 jóvenes visitó Birth Control en su sede de Pohlhausen. Esta actividad fue organizada por la revista juvenil "POP". La banda recibió la mención 'Silver POP Hammer' a la segunda mejor banda del año. Birth Control expresó su gratitud con un concierto gratuito en el sótano de su casa donde practicaban.

Reediciones
Fue publicado en CD por primera vez en Alemania en 1995. Fue publicado remasterizado en CD en 2001 con Repertoire. No se ha vuelto a publicar en vinilo oficialmente.

Opinión personal
Me preguntaba cual era la razón que fuera éste el primer álbum que escuché de Birth Control y la respuesta es que fue publicado en España y obtuvieron un cierto reconocimiento al realizar una gira por ella. El álbum me gustó e investigué sobre el resto de álbumes. Este un álbum con más pasajes de rock progresivo gracias a los teclados. El álbum abre con la canción que da título al álbum que es uno de los que más me gustan. Me recuerda a los primeros Genesis. Mi Mind es otro buen tema de rock progresivo con ciertos toques a lo Gentle Giant. Rockin' Rollin' Roller es más roquero pero con uso de sintetizador. Trial Trip es el tema que más recuerda a sus anteriores álbumes más duros y roqueros.
