Introducción
En el anterior artículo revisamos el tercer álbum Nice de The Nice publicado en septiembre de 1969 con Inmediate.
En este artículo revisamos su cuarto álbum Five Bridges. En 1969, la banda encontró tiempo para contribuir a otros proyectos. Emerson actuó como músico de sesión para Rod Stewart and the Faces, mientras que todo el grupo proporcionó respaldo instrumental para la canción "Hell's Angels" en el álbum de 1970 de Roy Harper Flat Baroque and Berserk.
A mediados de año, el promotor de la gira Michael Emmerson le pidió a The Nice que escribiera algo de música para el Newcastle upon Tyne Arts Festival. El resultado fue la suite Five Bridges. El grupo estrenó la pieza el 10 de octubre de 1969 en el Ayuntamiento de Newcastle con una orquesta completa dirigida por Joseph Eger. pero ésta no es la que se utilizó para la grabación del álbum del mismo nombre. La que se utilizó fue la que se interpretó en el Fairfield Hall, Croydon el 17 de octubre. El título se refiere a los cinco puentes de la ciudad que cruzan el río Tyne, y la letra de Jackson se refiere a su infancia en Newcastle y al campo de fútbol de St James' Park.

La portada del álbum, de Hipgnosis, presenta una imagen del Tyne Bridge.
Los cinco movimientos son:
"Fantasia" – orquesta con interludios de piano solo de Keith Emerson
"Second Bridge" – trío sin orquesta
"Chorale" – La voz de Lee Jackson con orquesta, alternando con interludios de trío de piano
"High Level Fugue" – piano con platillos acompañantes
"Finale" – una reafirmación del Second Bridge con músicos de jazz adicionales.
Emerson utilizó el conocido libro de texto de Walter Piston sobre orquestación para la obra. Emerson acreditó a Friedrich Gulda por inspirar la High Level Fugue, que utiliza figuras de jazz en la forma clásica estricta.
También se incluyeron en el álbum Five Bridges actuaciones en vivo del mismo concierto en el Fairfield Hall del Intermezzo de Sibelius y un movimiento de la Sinfonía Patética de Tchaikovsky. Ambos involucraron a la orquesta tocando la música en contraposición con las interpretaciones del trío. Material adicional descubierto recientemente de este concierto se publicó más tarde como parte de un conjunto de 3 CDs titulado Here Come The Nice. También se incluyó una grabación en vivo del mismo concierto "One of Those People".
El álbum Five Bridges también incluyó una mezcla de "Country Pie" de Bob Dylan con el "Concierto deBrandenburgo No. 6" de Bach (con una cita de la línea de jazz de Coleman Hawkins "Rifftide" también) grabada en Fillmore East, Manhattan, Nueva York, el 20 de diciembre de 1969.
El álbum fue publicado en Reino Unido en mayo de 1970 con Charisma, el sello especializado en rock progresivo que se constituyó en 1969 por el fuera manager de The Nice, Tony Stratton-Smith. En Estados Unidos fue lanzado en julio de 1970 con Mercury.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum:
El álbum sigue el ejemplo del álbum de Deep Purple, Concerto for Group and Orchestra, con un resultado similar pero menos espectacular. Emerson sigue conjugando bien música clásica con rock.
