Introducción

1974 fue un año decisivo para Kevin Ayers. Además de lanzar su música más convincente en este año, ayudó a proporcionar a otros artistas acceso a un escenario más amplio, especialmente la poetísa Lady June (June Campbell Cramer). El anterior artículo lo dedicamos a Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy, un álbum experimental de Lady June que cuenta con las contribuciones musicales de Kevin Ayers y Brian Eno.

En este artículo comentamos el álbum The Confessions of Dr. Dream and Other Stories de Kevin Ayers que marcó el cambio al sello discográfico Island, más comercial, y es considerado por muchos como el ejemplo más característico de la filosofía cambiante de Ayers. 

El álbum The Confessions of Dr. Dream and Other Stories 

Producción

El álbum fue grabado entre los meses de febrero-marzo de 1974 en Londres en los AIR Studios y en los Ramport Studios (las pistas rítmicas) y mezclado en los AIR Studios. Empleó una amplia gama de músicos de sesión por lo que la producción fue costosa, alrededor de £32,000, una cifra considerable para la época (según comentó Ayers en una entrevista para la NME). Mike Oldfield volvió a participar y el guitarrista Ollie Halsall de la banda de Rock Progresivo Patto comenzó una etapa de colaboración musical con Ayers que duraría veinte años. Otros músicos notables que participaron son el ex baterista de King Crimson Michael Giles, Geoffrey Richardson y John G. Perry de Caravan, Lol Coxhill, Nico y Steve Nye y Simon Jeffes de la Penguin Cafe Orchestra. 

Actuaron como ingenieros, Steve Nye y John Punter, asistidos por Sean Milligan y Gerry Leitch.

El diseño original de la carpeta del álbum corrió a cargo de Group Five, con ilustraciones de James Wedge y George Smith.

El tema principal The Confessions Of Doctor Dream and Other Stories es el tema más largo que ocupa casi toda la cara B. Está dividido en cuatro partes. Es un tema mucho más oscuro de lo que nos tiene acostumbrados Ayers, pero no por eso menos efectivo. El tema "It Begins With A Blessing / Once I Awakened / But It Ends With A Curse" es una versión del clásico de Soft Machine "Why Are We Sleeping" de cuando Ayers estaba en la banda.

Lanzamiento y recepción

El álbum fue lanzado por Island en el Reino Unido en julio de 1974.

El álbum fue aclamado por la crítica en su lanzamiento con Nick Kent de NME describiéndolo como "el trabajo grabado más formidable de Ayers hasta la fecha". El álbum presenta muchas de las canciones y arreglos más accesibles de Ayers. 

William Ruhlmann en AllMusic comentó sobre el álbum "El quinto álbum de Kevin Ayers, The Confessions of Doctor Dream and Other Stories, es típico de su trabajo. Canta en su distintiva voz profunda con su acento inglés culto (que suena muy parecido a John Cale) en canciones ambientadas en una variedad de estilos pop, desde el hard rock hasta una especie de enfoque de music hall. Con frecuencia es juguetón y atractivo, aunque sus canciones no suman mucho. El segundo lado del álbum contiene una suite de 18 minutos llamada "The Confessions of Doctor Dream", con un cameo de Nico, que ejemplifica el atractivo amable aunque desenfocado de Ayers".

Reediciones

En 2009 fue remasterizado y reeditado con bonus tracks, cuatro de ellos son canciones correspondientes a una sesión en el estudio Maida Vale de la BBC el 7 de julio de 1974 y retrasmitidas en el programa John Peel Show de BBC Radio One el 30 de julio.

Opinión personal

Kevin Ayers mantiene el tono simpático y desenfadado. Algunos han notado similitudes de la suite principal con el álbum de Robert Wyatt comentado recientemente, Rock Bottom publicado en el mismo año. Es lo más progresivo del álbum. A destacar los solos de guitarra muy rockeros y sobre todo el de Mike Oldfield.
