Introducción

El anterior artículo sobre Vangelis lo dedicamos a su álbum Heaven and Hell publicado en 1975: 1975: Cielo e infierno con Vangelis.

Durante su primera época como compositor, arreglista y músico de sesión hay registros de colaboración con otros artistas como Vana Veroutis, Vilma Lado y Ricardo Credi, con el grupo Panda, con Patty Pravo (conocida cantante por su éxito La Bámbola), el grupo Nuovi Angeli, con Koitza Kouroukli y su grupo The Mins y con el dúo Chrisma. Generalmente dichas colaboraciones tuvieron lugar en Grecia e Italia, lugares que frecuentaba en su primera etapa, antes de su marcha a Reino Unido y la creación de su propio estudio de composición y grabación.

En este artículo comentamos su colaboración con la cantante Mariangela que dio como fruto el álbum homónimo publicado en 1975.

Mariangela Celeste

Comienzos

Mariangela Celeste Papaconstantinu es de origen italo-griego (de padre griego y madre italiana). Nació en Milán, Italia en 1960. A la edad de seis años se mudó a Alemania donde creció en un entorno artístico. Unos años después se mudó a Grecia. Pronto fue considerada una niña prodigio apareciendo en televisión cantando sus propias composiciones y tocando la guitarra. Pronto se le ofreció un contrato con la discográfica Polygram Grecia. 

Con la canción "You Were Right" fue elegida como representante de Grecia en el festival Mundial de la Canción Popular  (World Popular Song) que se celebró en Tokio en 1973.

Primer sencillo

La canción "You Were Right"  fue publicada en la cara B de su primer sencillo "Sinefia" en 1973 (Polydor – 2061162). Mariangela había cantado previamente la canción "Sinefia" en el festival griego de la canción de Salónica con muy buenas reseñas.

Segundo sencillo

En 1974 publica su segundo sencillo Γαλάζιε Ουρανέ Μου / Θε Μου Κοντά Μου (Polydor – 2061194).

Vangelis

Después de escuchar algunas de las canciones de Mariangela, Vangelis en cooperación con Polygram Grecia decidieron que Mariangela grabaría otro sencillo producido por él. El resultado fue tan bueno que decidieron grabar más canciones con objeto de completar un álbum. La grabación y mezcla del álbum que se realizó en Inglaterra se alargó durante seis semanas. El álbum fue publicado en 1975 cuando Mariangela era una adolescente quinceañera. Las canciones que más le gustaron a Vangelis del álbum fueron "Memories Of Friends" y "Alone With The Day".

Desafortunadamente, el álbum fue mal promocionado y no se vendió bien. Pronto Polygram perdió el interés por Mariangela.

Etapa posterior

En 1976 de nuevo cantó una canción suya ( "Think I'm Losing My Men") en el festival Mundial de la Canción Popular de Tokio. La canción nunca fue publicada.

Vivió en el Reino Unido y en Estados Unidos durante un tiempo, antes de regresar a Grecia donde vive actualmente. Aunque se ha mantenido activa como artista, además de cantar y escribiendo canciones también es maestra de meditación (Lama) del budismo tibetano.

El álbum I Shall Return

Después de muchos años de preparación, grabación y producción, Mariangela presentó su nuevo álbum "I Shall Return" en 2006.  El álbum es cantada en inglés y tibetano, ya que está inspirada en el hermoso amor poemas del sexto Dalai Lama que vivió en el siglo XVII y fue traicionado y asesinado a una edad muy temprana después de profetizando su propia muerte y renacimiento en un lugar llamado Lithang. El álbum fue grabado en  LoftRecords, Alemania y en Golden Swan Studio, Grecia.

El álbum Mariangela

Grabación

Como su propio estudio todavía se estaba construyendo, Vangelis reservó tiempo de grabación en Orange Studios, un estudio pequeño pero céntrico cerca de Piccadilly. Allí conoció a Keith Spencer-Allen, ingeniero de sonido en Orange Studios en ese momento, que sería su asistente en Nemo durante la parte restante de los años setenta.

Vangelis no solo grabó este álbum en Orange Studios, sino también el álbum Phos con la banda griega Socrates. Primero Vangelis grabó el álbum de Socrates. Cuando llegó Mariangela al estudio todavía estaban grabando las canciones del álbum de Socrates y le propusieron hacer los coros en la canción "A Day In Heaven" y ella lo hizo de buen grado.

Después todas las canciones habían sido grabadas con Socrates, las sesiones de grabación continuaron con las canciones para el álbum de Mariangela. De la misma manera que había hecho Mariangela, todos los miembros de Socrates tocan (¡sin acreditar!) en varias canciones del álbum Mariangela.

Lanzamiento

Vangelis aparece acreditado en la portada como productor y arreglos, aunque se escucha tocar los teclados en el álbum. Se llegó a rumorear que había compuesto alguna de las canciones pero posteriormente el rumor fue desmentido.

El álbum fue publicado con Phillips en Grecia, Países Bajos, Sudáfrica y Canadá. En Estados Unidos fue publicado con Peter International. 

La portada

Portada del álbum Mariangela

La foto utilizada para la portada del álbum fue tomada después de la finalización del álbum por la esposa del jefe de Polydor Grecia en ese momento. Vestida especialmente para la ocasión Mariangela la foto fue tomada en el jardín de su casa de verano en Anavisos, cerca de Sounion.

El sencillo Honalulu Baby

Fue publicado en Países Bajos con Pillips el sencillo Honalulu Baby con Shoo Be Doo en la cara B. Como portada se utiliza la imagen recortada de la imagen utilizada para el álbum tintada en color verde. No hay muchas copias del sencillo. Se venden por un precio medio de 50€.

Nunca ha sido publicado en CD. En 2020 se hizo una reedición del álbum con Telephone Explosion Records (TER066).

Memories of Friends es una balada triste que me vuelve a recordar a los Carpenters. Una de las mejores del álbum y una que mas le gusta a Vangelis. Se nota que disfruta realizando unos solos instrumentales que me recuerdan al Apocalipse des Animaux.

Balada con aires folk que aunque el instrumento principal es la guitarra acústica de Mariangela, destacan los perfectos arreglos en los que termina sumergida la guitarra. Mágnifico solo de Vangelis. Es la otra canción que le gustó a Vangelis.

Mi opinión sobre el álbum: 

No se entiende la falta de éxito del álbum y que cayera en el olvido. Es cierto que tiene demasiadas baladas edulcoradas  e ingenuas pero guarda verdaderas joyas y la producción de Vangelis es implecable, sino no hubiera aparecido en los créditos con su nombre. Quizás fue por ser un álbum adelantado a su tiempo, a lo mejor le hubiera ido mejor a comienzos de los ochenta.
