Introducción

Eloy es una banda alemana de rock progresivo formada en 1969, cuyo estilo va desde el rock espacial al rock sinfónico. Su nombre proviene de la novela La máquina del tiempo, de H. G. Wells, en la que los Eloi, que son una de las estirpes humanas del futuro, llevan una existencia casi paradisíaca.

A pesar de su nacionalidad y período de tiempo, la banda generalmente no se considera krautrock debido a su sonido, que tiene mucho más en común con el rock progresivo inglés y los grupos de rock sinfónico como Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes y Camel.

Historia

Grabación y lanzamiento

En 1974 la banda estaba formada por el cantante y guitarrista Frank Bornemann, el guitarrista Manfred Wieczorke, que también tocaba los teclados, con Luitjen Janssen en el bajo y Fritz Randow en la batería. Wieczorke se especializó en los teclados por lo que se les unió un nuevo guitarrista, Detlef Schwaar.

Con esta formación, grabaron el que sería su cuarto álbum Power and the Passion entre junio y agosto de 1975 en los estudios Nedeltschev de Colonia (Alemania), el cual fue lanzado en 1975 en Alemania en el prestigioso sello Harvest de EMI (Pink Floyd, Deep Purple entre otros). Se publicó originalmente con una carpeta desplegable.

Estilo musical

El álbum es una continuidad del álbum anterior, progresando hacia el típico sonido Eloy con el que más adelante conseguiría el éxito. Es una síntesis de sonidos esféricos, ritmos pulsantes, guitarras poderosas y arreglos concertantes complejos, con el que van ganando cada vez más fans. Mezcla de rock progresivo y rock duro, que todavía sigue de actualidad como metal progresivo y bandas como Dream Theatre.

Contenido

Es un álbum conceptual sobre un joven, Jamie, que en 1975, viaja en el tiempo después de tomar una droga experimental desarrollada por su padre que es científico y se encuentra en París de 1358. Allí se enamora de Jeanne, la hija de un gran terrateniente, con quien fuma un porro. Aquí se ve envuelto en un motín de un campesino contra su propietario y es hecho prisionero hasta que finalmente es enviado de vuelta a su tiempo por un hechicero excéntrico. La historia fue creada por Eloy y Gordon Bennit.

Recepción

Al igual que el LP de Eloy de 1973, Inside, Power and the Passion actúa como un álbum de transición. Con más debilidades que fortalezas, contiene todos los elementos que asegurarían el éxito artístico de futuros álbumes como Dawn y Ocean. Por primera vez, el grupo desarrolla una sola historia sobre dos lados del LP...La introducción de sintetizadores, melotron y piano eléctrico en "Love Over Six Century", "Prison" y "The Bells of Notre Dame" anuncian la dirección de los próximos álbumes, mientras que "Introduction", "Daylight" y "Back Into the Present" se mantienen más cerca del borde del rock duro de los álbumes anteriores. Paradójicamente, esta dualidad es la que da a Power and the Passion su carácter y compensa sus defectos estructurales.

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum:

Mantienen su transición hacia el progresivo. Journey Into 1358 es un comienzo muy rockero que recuerda a Led Zeppelin y Deep Purple. Love Over Six Century es mi canción favorita, una balada progresiva en la que destaca el bajo y los teclados que me recuerda a Pink Floyd. Mutiny tiene una buena conjunción de teclados y guitarra con la sección rítmica que me recuerda a los primeros Genesis. Imprisonment es otra balada progresiva con muchos teclados y uno de mis temas preferidos del álbum. Daylight es un tema animado con un gran solo de guitarra que me recuerda a Deep Purple. The Zany Magician y Back Into The Present son los más heavy del álbum. El álbum termina con The Bells of Notre Dame es que es lenta y melancólica por el recuerdo del amor perdido.
