Las raíces del grupo de rock progresivo Kayak se encuentran en la ciudad holandesa de Hilversum, donde los miembros fundadores, amigos y vecinos, Ton Scherpenzeel (teclados, bajo) y Pim Koopman (batería, guitarras) tocaron juntos en varias bandas como Balderdash (1967) y High Tide Formation (1970).

El guitarrista Johan Slager tocó en la formación final de High Tide Formation hasta que el grupo se disolvió en 1971. Ese mismo año Ton, Pim y Johan comenzaron a grabar una serie de demos (un proyecto llamado 'Ten Ride Ticket') y ocasionalmente tocaron en vivo (como Alta Quies).

Alrededor de este tiempo, tanto Ton como Pim comenzaron a estudiar en la Academia de Música Hilversum, donde su compañero de estudios Max Werner unió fuerzas con Ton y Pim prestando su voz única a sus esfuerzos musicales. El principal instrumento clásico de Ton era el contrabajo, Pim y Max estudiaron percusión. Cuando el bajista Cees van Leeuwen (reemplazando al francés Jean Michel Marion) completó la primera formación, el grupo que se convertiría en Kayak logró obtener un contrato de grabación con EMI, después de ser despedido por Phonogram que tenía un interés inicial en la banda, incluso grabó algunos demos con ellos, pero al final lo dejó ir cuando Ton y Pim se negaron a grabar otro material que no fuera el suyo.
Kayak, como muchas otros grupos de rock progresivo, nunca tuvo una integración muy estable. Aparte de Tom Scherpenzeel, los restantes miembros de Kayak han ido cambiando con los años, a menudo abandonándolo para volver a regresar a él. Se disolvieron en 1982 después de lanzar nueve álbumes.
En 1999, se le pidió a la banda que actuara en el programa de televisión De Vrienden van Amstel Live. Después de esta actuación, decidieron reformarse, y lanzaron nueve álbumes de estudio más y tres álbumes en vivo. Siguen en activo.

En este artículo continuamos su historia hasta la publicación de su tercer álbum Royal Bed Bouncer.
Grabación
Cees van Leeuwen, el bajo en la formación original dejó la banda en 1975 para concentrarse en sus estudios de derecho. Ya no participaría en la grabación del tercer álbum. Se convirtió en abogado y en 2002 llegó a ser nombrado Secretario de Estado de Cultura y Medios de Holanda.

Su enfoque progresivo de los dos primeros álbumes se mezcló con un sonido pop/rock más básico. Nueve de las diez canciones fueron escritas por Ton Scherpenzeel, con Pim Koopman contribuyendo sólo con el instrumental "Patricia Anglaia". El álbum fue producido por Gerrit-Jan Leenders y Kayak.

El álbum fue grabado y mezclado por Pierre Geoffroy Chateau en los estudios Intertone en Heemstede, Países Bajos en 1975.
Lanzamiento
El LP original fue lanzado en 1975 por EMI en los Países Bajos (aunque también existen copias en el sello Phonogram/Vertigo). No fue publicado en el Reino Unido. El diseño de la portada fue realizado por Cream. El álbum fue publicado originalmente en una carpeta desplegable.

El álbum tuvo un éxito modesto pero lo más importante hizo el nombre de Kayak como una joven banda talentosa con un creciente número de fans.
El sencillo
"Chance For A Lifetime" fue el único sencillo lanzado de este álbum, alcanzando el top-20 holandés. Solo fue lanzado en Bélgica y Países Bajos.
