Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda británica Uriah Heep y su quinto álbum, The Magician's Birthday, publicado en 1972.
Uriah Heep es una banda de rock formada en Londres en 1969, la cual es considerada como "uno de los grupos más populares de principios de los 70".
Uriah Heep formaron parte de la escena del rock de principios de la década de 1970 y han sido conocidos como los principales pioneros de los géneros de hard rock, heavy metal y rock progresivo. La banda ha vendido más de 40 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo, con más de 4 millones de ventas en los Estados Unidos, donde sus canciones más conocidas incluyen «Gypsy», «Easy Livin'», «The Wizard», «Sweet Lorraine» y «Stealin'".Siguen teniendo un número considerable de seguidores y realizan actuaciones en escenarios de estadios en los Balcanes, Alemania, Japón, los Países Bajos, Rusia, Finlandia y Escandinavia.
Dos de sus álbumes más conocidos: Demons & Wizards y The Magician's Birthday fueron influencias claras para bandas como Helloween y otras seguidoras del rock épico.
Uriah Heep ha lanzado veinticinco álbumes de estudio de material original, veinte álbumes en vivo y cuarenta y un álbumes recopilatorios (incluidos dos álbumes de grandes éxitos). Trece de los álbumes de estudio de la banda han llegado a la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido (Return to Fantasy alcanzó el número 7 en 1975), mientras que de los quince álbumes de Uriah Heep en el Billboard 200, Demons and Wizards fue el más exitoso (número 23, 1972). Composición y grabación
Pocos meses más tarde del lanzamiento del álbum Demons and Wizards, Uriah Heep empezó a trabajar en su siguiente álbum que se titularía The Magician's Birthday. Sería un álbum conceptual basado en una corta historia escrita por el tecladista Ken Hensley durante los meses de junio-julio de 1972. El concepto se puede resumir en la lucha entre el bien y el mal. Se encontraban ante el reto de superar lo conseguido con el anterior con el que comenzaban a ser conocidos.
Desde el lanzamiento de Demons and Wizards, habían estado de gira y la grabación del nuevo álbum les ayudaría a comprobar como la banda había progresado, lo cual se reflejaría en las nuevos temas.
El álbum fue grabado como de costumbre en los Lansdowne Studios de Londres durante los meses de septiembre-octubre de 1972 con el ingeniero Peter Gallen y asistido por Ashley Howe.

Estilo musical
Caracterizado como heavy metal y rock progresivo, la banda se encuentra en su mejor momento.
"Uriah Heep solía tener una imagen, ahora tiene personalidad", escribió Melody Maker en 1973. Gran parte de esa personalidad provino del extravagante Byron. "David fue el punto de comunicación, el punto focal de la presentación escénica de todo el grupo. Tenía tanto carisma, tanta habilidad", admitió Hensley muchos años después. Pero Hensley también se convirtió en un instrumentista sofisticado y en un personaje escénico, cuya escritura y estilo de teclado encendieron al resto de la banda.
El tema que da nombre al álbum es una epopeya de fantasía dividida en varias partes, destacando el duelo vocal entre Hensley y Byron y un extenso solo de guitarra de Box, siendo este el punto álgido del álbum.
Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 10 de noviembre de 1972 por Bronze en el Reino Unido. Originalmente fue publicado con una carpeta desplegable cuya portada fue diseñada de nuevo por Roger Dean. El interior de la carpeta tenía fotos de la banda y notas de Hensley, mientras que la funda interior presentaba letras impresas. El título del álbum y la portada de Roger Dean volvían a sugerir un tema de fantasía medieval de acuerdo con la historia escrita por Hensley.

El álbum obtuvo peor resultado que el anterior álbum en las listas alcanzando el puesto 28 y permaneciendo 3 semanas en lista. Finalmente el álbum fue certificado oro por más de 100.000 unidades vendidas.

También fue publicado con Island / Bronze en Alemania (puesto 7 de las listas), Austria, Países Bajos, Dinamarca (puesto 5), Australia (puesto 6), Nueva Zelanda, Malasia, Filipinas, Singapur, Taiwan, Italia, Japón (puesto 43), Sudáfrica, Suecia, Noruega (puesto 5), Francia, España, Finlandia (número 1), Grecia, México, Venezuela, Perú, Brasil e Israel.
Fue editado en noviembre de 1972 por Mercury Records en los Estados Unidos y Canadá. Alcanzó el puesto 31 en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos, empeorando el resultado del anterior álbum. El álbum fue certificado oro por más de 500.000 unidades vendidas.
En Finlandia, el álbum volvió a alcanzar el número 1. Esto demuestra que estaban ganando aceptación entre el público a pesar de no recibir críticas favorables.
El sencillo Spider Woman
En diciembre de 1972 se publicó en Alemania el primer sencillo del álbum con los temas Spider Woman / Sunrise. Alcanzó el puesto 14 en las listas.

El tema Spider Woman se toca con ocho acordes: E7+9, D, A, E, G, F, G# y F#. Hay una introducción al principio de la canción y una salida para el final.
El tema Sunrise fue escrita por Ken Hensley y cantada por David Byron. La canción es considerada uno de los clásicos de la banda, y también se hizo famosa por sus actuaciones en vivo a finales de 1972 y 1973. Fue incluida, como canción de apertura, en el primer álbum en vivo de la banda, Uriah Heep Live, en 1973.

El sencillo Sweet Lorraine
En diciembre de 1972 se publicó en Estados Unidos y Canadá el segundo sencillo del álbum con los temas Sweet Lorraine / Blind Eye.
Sweet Lorraine fue escrita por Mick Box, Gary Thain y David Byron y alcanzó el puesto #91 en el Billboard Hot 100 de Estados Unidos. Es una de las canciones más conocidas de la banda, es famosa, en parte, por su solo de sintetizador Moog interpretado por Ken Hensley. Se hizo popular en las actuaciones en vivo.
También fue publicado con esta combinación en Canadá, Italia y Francia.

Recepción
El álbum recibió críticas mixtas de los críticos contemporáneos. Mike Saunders, escribiendo para Creem, llamó al álbum "un paquete lleno de basura", encontrando el primer lado del LP "escuchable" a pesar de la mala producción y el lado dos francamente "irritante". El crítico de Village Voice, Robert Christgau, describió las canciones del álbum como "fantasías de heavy metal de tercera mano (...) enganchado a algunos arreglos limpios y poderosos, y una buena melodía o dos".
Las críticas modernas son más positivas. El crítico de AllMusic destacó los elementos progresivos del álbum y escribió que "The Magician's Birthday nunca alcanza las alturas consistentes de Look at Yourself o Demons and Wizards, pero sigue siendo una escucha sólida para los fans de Uriah Heep".
Joe Geesein de Record Collector elogió a los músicos y el buen sonido de la reedición del álbum, pero escribió que la mayoría de las canciones «no se mantienen tan bien» en comparación con la apertura «Sunrise» o el sencillo «Spider Woman». El periodista canadiense Martin Popoff llamó a The Magician's Birthday "otro viaje colorido y místico", aunque "algo inconexo, menos accesible y en total mucho menos metálico" que los álbumes anteriores, "culminando en la epopeya más desgarradora y pesadillesca de todas la banda, el tema principal de diez minutos".

Opinión personal
Es un álbum un poco menos duro y más melódico que los anteriores. Con el comienzo del uso del sintetizador por parte de Hensley, lo encuentro más progresivo. El álbum tiene un buen comienzo con el roquero Sunrise. El melodioso Blind Eye es uno de los que más me gustan. Echoes in the Dark es lo más cercano al progresivo que han estado gracias a los teclados y la guitarra a lo Pink Floyd y es mi tema favorito. Rain es una bonita balada. "Sweet Lorraine" es una pegadiza canción roquera. Tales es mi segundo tema favorito combinación de teclados electrónicos y guitarra acústica. Y él álbum cierra con la épica suite que da título al álbum con su impresionante solo de guitarra.
