Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda británica Uriah Heep y su óctavo álbum de estudio, Return to Fantasy, publicado en 1975.
Uriah Heep es una banda de rock formada en Londres en 1969, la cual es considerada como "uno de los grupos más populares de principios de los 70".
Uriah Heep formaron parte de la escena del rock de principios de la década de 1970 y han sido conocidos como los principales pioneros de los géneros de hard rock, heavy metal y rock progresivo. La banda ha vendido más de 40 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo, con más de 4 millones de ventas en los Estados Unidos, donde sus canciones más conocidas incluyen «Gypsy», «Easy Livin'», «The Wizard», «Sweet Lorraine» y «Stealin'".Siguen teniendo un número considerable de seguidores y realizan actuaciones en escenarios de estadios en los Balcanes, Alemania, Japón, los Países Bajos, Rusia, Finlandia y Escandinavia.
Dos de sus álbumes más conocidos: Demons & Wizards y The Magician's Birthday fueron influencias claras para bandas como Helloween y otras seguidoras del rock épico.
Uriah Heep ha lanzado veinticinco álbumes de estudio de material original, veinte álbumes en vivo y cuarenta y un álbumes recopilatorios (incluidos dos álbumes de grandes éxitos). Trece de los álbumes de estudio de la banda han llegado a la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido (Return to Fantasy alcanzó el número 7 en 1975), mientras que de los quince álbumes de Uriah Heep en el Billboard 200, Demons and Wizards fue el más exitoso (número 23, 1972). Antecedentes
Gary Thain estaba en un problema aún más serio. Según Blows, "una extenuante agenda de giras, agravada por la fuerte dependencia de las drogas del bajista (inherente incluso antes de unirse a Heep) estaba pasando factura, aunque las cosas llegaron a un punto crítico durante la gira durante septiembre", cuando el bajista recibió una seria descarga eléctrica en el escenario en Dallas durante un concierto en el Moody Coliseum de la Universidad Metodista del Sur el 15 de septiembre de 1974. El resto de la gira por Estados Unidos fue cancelada y sus fechas en el Reino Unido reprogramadas para octubre. Poco después de salir del hospital, Thain, en la revista Sounds, acusó abiertamente al mánager Gerry Bron de haber convertido a Uriah Heep en una mera "cosa financiera" y fue despedido dos meses después del último concierto del grupo de 1974 en el New Theatre de Oxford el 14 de diciembre. Un año después, el 8 de diciembre de 1975, Gary Thain fue encontrado muerto en su casa de Norwood Green, después de una sobredosis de heroína.

Una grabación en vivo, realizada en los estudios Shepperton en Surrey, Inglaterra, en 1974 y destinada a ser transmitida en un programa de radio, se convertiría en el último registro sonoro de Uriah Heep con la participación de Gary Thain.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 13 de junio de 1975 por Bronze en el Reino Unido. El lanzamiento original en vinilo venía en una funda desplegable con una foto de la banda en el interior. La ilustración de la portada es del artista británico Dave Field.

También fue publicado con Bronze en Alemania (puesto 21 de las listas), Austria (puesto 3 de las listas), Dinamarca (puesto 12), Noruega (puesto 2), Finlandia (número 8), Países Bajos (puesto 10), Italia, Suecia, Francia, España, Grecia, Turquía, Israel, Japón (puesto 74), Australia (puesto 19), Nueva Zelanda (puesto 29), Taiwan, México, Brasil y Sudáfrica.
Fue editado en julio de 1975 por Warner Bros Records en los Estados Unidos y Canadá cuando la banda ya se encontraba de gira por allí. Alcanzó el puesto 85 en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos. Alcanzó el puesto 83 en Canadá.
Recepción del álbum
"Return to Fantasy conserva la experimentación musical que caracterizó a Sweet Freedom y Wonderworld, pero tiene una sensación general de rock más duro que lo hace más consistente que cualquiera de esos álbumes", dijo Donald A. Guarisco en su reseña retrospectiva de AllMusic. Criticó algunos de los "saltos de género" del álbum y concluyó: "Al final, Return to Fantasy carece de la coherencia de un clásico de Uriah Heep como Demons and Wizards, pero sigue siendo un álbum fuerte y agradable que está garantizado para complacer a los fans del grupo". La crítica del periodista canadiense Martin Popoff fue muy crítica con la grabación del álbum "dominada por un órgano estridente pero delgado y una batería descuidada" y con la actuación "distante e insegura" de Byron, juzgando el álbum "completamente a la deriva sin rastro de chispa".
El sencillo Prima Donna
El 13 de junio de 1975 se publicó en el Reino Unido el sencillo del álbum con los temas Prima Donna / Shout It Out. El lado B del sencillo, Shout It Out no fue incluida en el álbum.
"Prima Donna" fue escrita por Ken Hensley, Mick Box, David Byron y Lee Kerslake y cantada por David Byron. El sencillo alcanzó el número diez en Dinamarca y el número tres en Noruega.

En diciembre de 1975 se publicó en Alemania, Países Bajos y Japón el sencillo del álbum con los temas Return to Fantasy / Shout It Out. En Alemania se publicó con The Time Will Come en el lado B, el cual tampoco se publicó en el álbum.

"Return to Fantasy" fue escrita por Ken Hensley y David Byron. Fue el último sencillo del grupo en contar con David Byron en la voz principal.

"Return to Fantasy" ha sido versionada por la banda alemana de power metal Gamma Ray en su álbum de estudio, Somewhere Out in Space, como bonus track en Japón.
La gira
La siguiente "gira mundial de un año" (según un titular de NME), se vio empañada por un nuevo accidente. Mick Box se cayó del escenario en Louisville, Kentucky, el 2 de agosto de 1975, rompiéndose el hueso radial de su brazo derecho (pero perseveró tanto en el set como en la gira, recibiendo tres inyecciones por noche). El 26 de marzo de 1976 en el Auditorio Roy Wilkins en St. Paul, Minnesota, John Wetton tuvo un accidente cuando (al igual que su predecesor, Thain) recibió una descarga eléctrica en el escenario.

Opinión personal
La incorporación de John Wetton (ex-King Crimson) trae aires nuevos a la banda. Pero el resultado no me convence y no supera al anterior álbum Wonderworld. El álbum abre con el tema que da título al disco que es mi favorito y me daba esperanzas de encontrar más pistas así. Pero continúa con la roquera Shady Lady que no aporta nada. De "Devil's Daugther" destacar la parte instrumental con una guerra entre teclados y guitarra. Beautiful Dream es mi tercera favorita gracias a los teclados. Prima Donna es un buen rock&roll animado por el saxo de Mel Collins (otro ex-King Crimson). "Your Turn To Remember" es un tema de country-rock pasable. En "Showdown" vuelven a su sonido característico con un buen solo de guitarra. Why Did You Go es una bonita balada. Y el álbum cierra con A Year Or A Day, que aunque esperaba algo más épico es mi segundo favorito con una buena construcción empezando lenta y va in crescendo.
