Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda británica Uriah Heep y su séptimo álbum de estudio, Wonderworld, publicado en 1974.
Uriah Heep es una banda de rock formada en Londres en 1969, la cual es considerada como "uno de los grupos más populares de principios de los 70".
Uriah Heep formaron parte de la escena del rock de principios de la década de 1970 y han sido conocidos como los principales pioneros de los géneros de hard rock, heavy metal y rock progresivo. La banda ha vendido más de 40 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo, con más de 4 millones de ventas en los Estados Unidos, donde sus canciones más conocidas incluyen «Gypsy», «Easy Livin'», «The Wizard», «Sweet Lorraine» y «Stealin'".Siguen teniendo un número considerable de seguidores y realizan actuaciones en escenarios de estadios en los Balcanes, Alemania, Japón, los Países Bajos, Rusia, Finlandia y Escandinavia.
Dos de sus álbumes más conocidos: Demons & Wizards y The Magician's Birthday fueron influencias claras para bandas como Helloween y otras seguidoras del rock épico.
Uriah Heep ha lanzado veinticinco álbumes de estudio de material original, veinte álbumes en vivo y cuarenta y un álbumes recopilatorios (incluidos dos álbumes de grandes éxitos). Trece de los álbumes de estudio de la banda han llegado a la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido (Return to Fantasy alcanzó el número 7 en 1975), mientras que de los quince álbumes de Uriah Heep en el Billboard 200, Demons and Wizards fue el más exitoso (número 23, 1972). A finales de la década de 1970, la banda tuvo un éxito masivo en Alemania, donde el sencillo «Lady in Black» fue un gran éxito.

Han experimentado numerosos cambios de alineación a lo largo de sus 55 años de carrera, dejando a Box como el único miembro original restante. Los ex miembros notables de la banda han sido los vocalistas David Byron, John Lawton, John Sloman y Peter Goalby; los bajistas Gary Thain, Trevor Bolder, John Wetton, Bob Daisley, Paul Newton y John Jowitt; los bateristas Nigel Olsson, Iain Clark, Lee Kerslake y Chris Slade; y los tecladistas Ken Hensley, Gregg Dechert y John Sinclair.

Grabación
Uriah Heep comenzó a grabar su séptimo álbum de estudio, Wonderworld, en enero de 1974, tan sólo cuatro meses después del lanzamiento del anterior, Sweet Freedom. La banda terminó las tareas de grabación en marzo del mismo año. Wonderworld fue el segundo álbum de Uriah Heep grabado fuera del Reino Unido por motivos fiscales. Esta vez el lugar de grabación fue el estudio Musicland de Giorgio Moroder en Múnich.
Grabar en el extranjero interrumpió el método normal de operación de la banda y eso tuvo un gran efecto negativo en el grupo. Nuestra comunicación se estaba desmoronando, estábamos discutiendo sobre cosas como las regalías y nos estábamos involucrando en asuntos más allá de la música".Ken Hensley
El guitarrista Mick Box comentó que hacer el álbum “fue una pesadilla infernal"..."David estaba borracho la mayor parte del tiempo, Kenny estaba pasando por un momento de depresión emocional y yo estaba constantemente tratando de ayudarlos, así que también fue difícil para mí. También hubo un poco de fricción porque al Kenny no le gustaba toda la atención que estaba recibiendo David".

Además del creciente consumo de alcohol por parte de Byron, la adicción a la cocaína de Hensley comenzó a salirse de control
David [Byron] era complicado incluso en las mejores circunstancias. Constantemente generaba situaciones difíciles, y Ken [Hensley] tampoco era precisamente un santo. Estas tensiones se hicieron más evidentes que nunca durante la producción del álbum Wonderworld."Gerry Thain

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 7 de junio de 1974 por Bronze en el Reino Unido. El lanzamiento original en vinilo venía en una funda simple con las letras en la funda interior. El título hace referencia al mundo onírico en el que Hensley se inspiraría para hacer muchas de sus temas.
La portada exterior delantera del lanzamiento en vinilo original muestra a los miembros de Uriah Heep juntos como estatuas. Mick Box es el único sin camiseta ni zapatos. Hensley expresó más tarde su descontento con la portada. Según Box, se debería haber elegido una mejor imagen del baterista Lee Kerslake para la portada, porque se parece “a un gnomo que podría encontrar en mi propio jardín”.
El álbum decepcionó tanto a los fans como a los miembros de la banda.

A nivel internacional el álbum fue mejor recibido. También fue publicado con Island / Bronze en Alemania (puesto 7 de las listas), Austria (puesto 2 de las listas), Dinamarca (puesto 3), Noruega (puesto 3), Finlandia (número 5), Países Bajos, Italia, Suecia, Yugoslavia, Francia, España, Grecia, Benelux, Dinamarca, Turquía, Israel, Japón (puesto 76), Australia (puesto 19), Nueva Zelanda, Singapur, Tailandia, Malasia, Venezuela, Brasil y Sudáfrica.
Fue editado en junio de 1974 por Warner Bros Records en los Estados Unidos y Canadá cuando la banda ya se encontraba de gira por allí. Alcanzó el puesto 38 en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos. Alcanzó el puesto 31 en Canadá.
Recepción del álbum
Un escritor no especificado de Billboard comentó: “Heep es ahora tan comercial en su mezcla de instrumentación de heavy metal y voces top 40 como Led Zeppelin en «Stairway to Heaven»”.
La reseña retrospectiva de AllMusic señaló que "Wonderworld continúa en la línea de Sweet Freedom, tratando de llevar el atractivo de Uriah Heep a un nivel más amplio mientras conserva los grandiosos elementos característicos (el ataque de la guitarra al órgano, el grito operístico de David Byron) que los hicieron sobresalir". Comparándolo con el trabajo anterior de la banda, el crítico Donald A. Guarisco agregó que "el resultado es un álbum que es sólido pero no tan inspirado como Look at Yourself o Demons and Wizards. El porcentaje de hard rock es un poco mayor en este álbum". Martin Popoff encontró a Wonderworld "conceptualmente vacío" y "carente de la química instrumental fluida que mantenía unido a su predecesor", mientras que todavía contenía dos gemas en las canciones "Suicidal Man" y "So Tired".

El sencillo Something or Nothing
El 10 de mayo de 1974 se publicó en el Reino Unido el sencillo del álbum con los temas Something or Nothing / What Can I Do. El lado B del sencillo, "What Can I Do" no fue incluida en el álbum.

"Something or Nothing" fue escrita por Ken Hensley, Mick Box y Gary Thain y cantada por David Byron. La canción se toca con solo cuatro acordes: D, A, C y G. La canción ha sido interpretada durante los conciertos en vivo de Uriah Heep, y fue incluida en su segundo álbum en vivo Live at Shepperton '74 como la cuarta pista.

La gira
Gary Thain estaba en un problema aún más serio. Según Blows, "una extenuante agenda de giras, agravada por la fuerte dependencia de las drogas del bajista (inherente incluso antes de unirse a Heep) estaba pasando factura, aunque las cosas llegaron a un punto crítico durante la gira durante septiembre", cuando el bajista recibió una seria descarga eléctrica en el escenario en Dallas durante un concierto en el Moody Coliseum de la Universidad Metodista del Sur el 15 de septiembre de 1974. El resto de la gira por Estados Unidos fue cancelada y sus fechas en el Reino Unido reprogramadas para octubre. Poco después de salir del hospital, Thain, en la revista Sounds, acusó abiertamente al mánager Gerry Bron de haber convertido a Uriah Heep en una mera "cosa financiera" y fue despedido dos meses después del último concierto del grupo de 1974 en el New Theatre de Oxford el 14 de diciembre. Un año después, el 8 de diciembre de 1975, Gary Thain fue encontrado muerto en su casa de Norwood Green, después de una sobredosis de heroína.

Opinión personal
Considero que es un álbum infravalorado. A mi me gusta mucho, empezando por el tema que da título al disco que es sentimental y conmovedor. En la misma línea está The Shadows And The Wind and The Easy Road. Y el álbum cierra épicamente con Dreams, lo más cercano al progresivo y mi favorita.
