Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda británica Uriah Heep y su noveno álbum de estudio, High And Mighty, publicado en 1976.
Uriah Heep es una banda de rock formada en Londres en 1969, la cual es considerada como "uno de los grupos más populares de principios de los 70".
Uriah Heep formaron parte de la escena del rock de principios de la década de 1970 y han sido conocidos como los principales pioneros de los géneros de hard rock, heavy metal y rock progresivo. La banda ha vendido más de 40 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo, con más de 4 millones de ventas en los Estados Unidos, donde sus canciones más conocidas incluyen «Gypsy», «Easy Livin'», «The Wizard», «Sweet Lorraine» y «Stealin'".Siguen teniendo un número considerable de seguidores y realizan actuaciones en escenarios de estadios en los Balcanes, Alemania, Japón, los Países Bajos, Rusia, Finlandia y Escandinavia.
Dos de sus álbumes más conocidos: Demons & Wizards y The Magician's Birthday fueron influencias claras para bandas como Helloween y otras seguidoras del rock épico.
Uriah Heep ha lanzado veinticinco álbumes de estudio de material original, veinte álbumes en vivo y cuarenta y un álbumes recopilatorios (incluidos dos álbumes de grandes éxitos). Trece de los álbumes de estudio de la banda han llegado a la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido (Return to Fantasy alcanzó el número 7 en 1975), mientras que de los quince álbumes de Uriah Heep en el Billboard 200, Demons and Wizards fue el más exitoso (número 23, 1972). Antecedentes
La siguiente "gira mundial de un año" (según un titular de NME), se vio empañada por un nuevo accidente. Mick Box se cayó del escenario en Louisville, Kentucky, el 2 de agosto de 1975, rompiéndose el hueso radial de su brazo derecho (pero perseveró tanto en el set como en la gira, recibiendo tres inyecciones por noche). El 26 de marzo de 1976 en el Auditorio Roy Wilkins en St. Paul, Minnesota, John Wetton tuvo un accidente cuando (al igual que su predecesor, Thain) recibió una descarga eléctrica en el escenario.

La cuestión de la producción se convirtió en este álbum en el principal punto de discordia. Con su productor Gerry Bron comprometido con proyectos no musicales (incluyendo su servicio de taxi aéreo), la banda decidió producir el álbum ellos mismos con los ingenieros Ashley Howe y Peter Gallen. Más tarde, el mánager insistió en que el resultado era el peor álbum de Heep, mientras que Hensley acusó al mánager de ignorar deliberadamente los intereses de la banda. Hensley pensó que la discográfica Bronze descuidó a propósito la producción del álbum.

High and Mighty fue el último álbum de Uriah Heep en contar con el bajista John Wetton y el vocalista y miembro fundador David Byron, quien fue despedido más tarde ese año debido a sus problemas con el alcohol y las diferencias con las prioridades de la banda.
El resultado fue un álbum menos duro. Box comentó: "Se estaba poniendo un poco suave. Era menos de la 'eavy y más de la 'umble'." (haciendo una referencia puntual a la autodefinición de Uriah Heep como "umble" en la novela David Copperfield de Dickens).
Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 21 de mayo de 1976 por Bronze en el Reino Unido. A pesar de los problemas de producción, el álbum fue presentado de la manera más lujosa (con periodistas y empresarios volando a la cima de una montaña suiza para una recepción). Una presentación que nadie olvidaría, pero como comenta la propia banda: Uriah Heep era exceso personificado. El álbum fue publicado en vinilo con una funda simple con las letras en la funda interior.

También fue publicado con Bronze en Alemania (puesto 48 de las listas), Austria (puesto 3 de las listas), Dinamarca, Noruega (puesto 4), Finlandia (número 27), Países Bajos (puesto 14), Italia, Suecia (puesto 21), Francia, España, Grecia, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Turquía, Japón (puesto 74), Australia (puesto 66), Nueva Zelanda (puesto 29), Taiwan, México, Brasil y Sudáfrica.
Fue editado en mayo de 1976 por Warner Bros Records en los Estados Unidos y Canadá. Alcanzó el puesto 165 en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos.
Recepción del álbum
Bron todavía sostiene que "fue el peor álbum de Heep".
El álbum no fue bien recibido, ya que estilísticamente se desvió de su vena anterior de rock progresivo hacia un territorio más convencional, y careció de las composiciones largas características del grupo y temas fantásticos. "Varias de las canciones muestran a la banda coqueteando con elementos pop de una manera que no complementa su estilo de hard rock", dijo Donald A. Guarisco en su reseña retrospectiva de AllMusic. Agregó que High and Mighty "muestra destellos de la antigua potencia de fuego del grupo, pero en última instancia se hunde por una combinación de experimentación desenfocada y composición de canciones desigual". Martin Popoff calificó el álbum de «afeminado, ilógico, exagerado, cogido con pajitas», citando solo la canción «One Way or Another» como «prometedora» y el resto como un despilfarro de «los talentos parpadeantes de la banda».
El sencillo One Way or Another
El 25 de junio de 1976 se publicó en el Reino Unido el sencillo del álbum con los temas One Way or Another / Misty Eyes. One Way or Another fue escrita por Ken Hensley y contó con las voces principales de John Wetton y Ken Hensley. No fue publicado en otros países.

El sencillo Make a Little Love
En Noruega, donde los álbumes de Uriah Heep continuaban funcionando bien, se publicó el sencillo Make A Little Love / Weep In Silence en octubre de 1976.
La gira
Los conciertos en directo eran cada vez más caóticos debido a la inconsistencia de Byron en el escenario. "Siempre se emborrachaba después del espectáculo, pero nunca había llegado al punto en que pusiera en peligro el espectáculo en sí. La actuación siempre había sido ante todo con David. Fue cuando el programa comenzó a quedar en segundo plano que comenzaron los problemas", recordó Hensley. "La distancia entre David y el resto había crecido hasta alcanzar proporciones inviables", según Blows. "Es una tragedia decirlo, pero David era una de esas personas clásicas que no podía enfrentar el hecho de que las cosas estaban mal y buscó consuelo en una botella", comentó Bron. En julio de 1976, después del último concierto de una gira por España, Byron fue despedido. A partir de este momento Byron se dedicó a su carrera como solista, hasta su fallecimiento, acaecido en 1985.

Poco después, el bajista John Wetton anunció que se retiraba. Obviamente él no estaba cómodo en la banda, ni sus compañeros con él. Hensley explicó más tarde: "Cuando se unió, pensamos que podríamos reemplazar a un gran bajista (Thain) con otro gran bajista, pero ignoramos el factor de personalidad, que es crucial. Era como injertar un nuevo trozo de piel, pero simplemente no funcionó, el cuerpo lo rechazó".

Opinión personal
Creo que es un álbum infravalorado. El álbum abre con One Way Or Another, un tema típico de la banda, que te anima a continuar escuchando el álbum. Le sigue la balada Weep in Silence que es mi tema favorito en el que destaca una intensa guitarra. Misty Eyes es un tema animado que es mi segundo favorito. En Midnight destacan los juegos vocales. Can't Keep a Good Band Down es un tema muy roquero. Woman Of The World tiene un aire de cabaret. Footprints in the Snow es un tema en crescendo que es mi tercer favorito. Can't Stop Singing es el tema que menos me gusta y parece fuera de contexto. Make a Little Love es un buen rock&roll. Confession es una bonita balada con un buen piano y voces, pero yo me esperaba una final más épico.
