Este artículo lo dedicamos a los dos primeros álbumes del grupo de rock progresivo Greenslade.
Greenslade fue una banda inglesa de rock progresivo, formada en el otoño de 1972 por el tecladista Dave Greenslade y el bajista Tony Reeves, con el tecladista Dave Lawson y el baterista Andrew McCulloch.

La banda hizo su debut en vivo en el Zoom Club de Frankfurt en noviembre de 1972. Greenslade y Reeves se conocían musicalmente desde hacía tiempo, con un fondo común en el jazz, ya que habían sido miembros originales de la banda de jazz Colosseum. Los dos decidieron que querían formar una banda con dos teclistas. En ese momento, Reeves era director de A&R para el sello progresivo independiente Greenwich Gramophone Co., e invitó a Dave Lawson de Samurai a formar parte del grupo. Lawson fue anteriormente miembro de The Alan Bown Set and Web, mientras que el baterista Andrew McCulloch fue brevemente miembro de King Crimson y de Fields.
Su primer álbum fue grabado en los estudios Morgan de Londres y publicado en febrero de 1973 con Warner Bros. La portada del álbum es de Roger Dean, famoso por sus portadas de Yes. El álbum tiene siete pistas que comprenden seis canciones y una instrumental con una pista vocal.
La canción "Feathered Friends" fue lanzada como sencillo promocional, con "An English Western" y "Temple Song" en el lado B.

Un segundo sencillo, para venta al público fue lanzado en mayo de 1973 con "Temple Song" en el lado A y "An English Western" en el lado B.
Y también una sesión para el programa "In Concert" en abril de 1973:
Ambas sesiones se incluirían como bonus tracks en las ediciones en CD.

Al salir del Colosseum, Dave Greenslade (hijo del arreglista orquestal Art Greenslade) formó su propia banda en 1972... Lo más notable de su visión del rock progresivo es lo mucho que está arraigado en el blues, a diferencia de muchos de sus contemporáneos.Lanzaron el álbum Greenslade en el 73, forjando su propio pequeño nicho en la escena musical del Reino Unido, sin estar en peligro real de alcanzar a los líderes del mercado. El álbum es bastante relajado, con grandes temas en lugar de melodías particularmente fuertes, pero hicieron un buen ruido y realmente no sonaron mucho como cualquier otra banda. Al frente delMellotron, como con tantas bandas, la mayor parte del uso (por el propio Greenslade) son de acordes de cuerdas, aunque creo que puedo escuchar violonchelos en la introducción de "Drowning Man" y una débil parte de flauta en "Temple Song". Su segundo álbum Bedside Manners Are Extra fue grabado en los estudios Morgan. Los miembros de la banda recordaron las grabaciones como un momento muy positivo para Greenslade. Su álbum debut había recibido buenassa críticas y ventas lo suficientemente sólidas como para asegurar la continuidad de su carrera, y los miembros de la banda se llevaban bien tanto musical como personalmente. La asociación de composición de canciones Dave Greenslade-Dave Lawson estaba floreciendo, los dos se habían establecido en una rutina en la que Greenslade componía una secuencia de acordes y afinaba y Lawson luego agregaba melodía y letra.

Al igual que con su álbum debut, ninguna de las canciones había sido tocada en vivo antes de entrar en el estudio, y la banda en su lugar se preparó ensayando extensamente las canciones en un salón de la iglesia cerca de donde Dave Greenslade vivía en ese momento, en Middlesex. Como resultado de su preparación, el álbum fue grabado en solo nueve días, comenzando el 23 de julio y terminando el 31 de julio. Fue una grabación de estilo "en vivo", con sobregrabaciones mínimas y sin edición conjunta de diferentes tomas.

El álbum fue lanzado en noviembre de 1973 con Warner Bros en el Reino Unido.
El 20 de febrero de 1973 la banda apareció en el programa de televisión The Old Grey Whistle Test de la BBC tocando dos temas: "Pilgrims Progress" y "Bedside Manners Are Extra", ambos del álbum Bedside Manners Are Extra.
