Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda Starcastle y su segundo álbum Fountains Of Light publicado en 1977.
Starcastle es una banda estadounidense de rock progresivo de Champaign, Illinois, Estados Unidos. La historia de Starcastle se remonta a 1968, cuando Steve Hagler (guitarra), Mike Castlehorn (batería) y Paul Tassler (bajo) formaron St. James, una banda de versiones que tuvo cierto éxito tocando en pubs y bares locales. Poco después de unirse el tecladista Herb Schildt, la banda estaba preparada para grandes cosas; sin embargo, una tragedia los afectó: Mike Castlehorn falleció en un accidente de tráfico y fue sustituido por Steve Tassler. El grupo tocó muchos shows bajo los nombres de Pegasus y Mad John Fever antes de establecerse finalmente en Starcastle. ´

En 1973 se les unió el ex vocalista de REO Speedwagon, Terry Luttrel.
Firmaron su primer contrato con Epic Records en 1974, obtuvieron una extensa promoción y realizaron numerosas actuaciones en la zona de St. Louis.
Después de años de practicar y escribir nuevo material, Starcastle lanzó su debut homónimo en 1976. Se vendió bien y la banda fue bien recibida en Estados Unidos y Canadá.
Lanzaron tres álbumes más con Epic: Fountains of Light, Citadel y Real to Reel que no se vendieron tan bien como el primero y a menudo fueron criticados por sonar demasiado similares musicalmente a Yes. Fueron teloneros de bandas como Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Fleetwood Mac, Kansas, Boston, Rush, Journey y otras. Después de varios cambios de formación, la banda entró en una pausa de diez años a partir de 1987.
En 2002, Gary Strater, Steve Tassler y Steve Hagler lanzaron álbumes en solitario en el sello Sunsinger. En 2004, la banda decidió hacer un tributo a Gary Strater, quien tenía cáncer de páncreas desde 2003. Tocaron juntos con Gary (esta fue su última actuación con la banda). Gary falleció un año después, pero no antes de grabar suficiente material para su último disco llamado "Song of Times" que fue lanzado en 2007.

En noviembre de 2018, el sitio web oficial de la banda anunció el lanzamiento de Alchemy, un lanzamiento de material de archivo en estudio y en vivo de la alineación de la banda de la década de 1980. Además, su sitio web anunció una nueva alineación de la banda compuesta por George Harp (voz) y Bruce Botts (guitarra), quienes estaban en la alineación de la década de 1980.

Antecedentes
Las ventas de Fountains Of Light no fueron tan bien como en el anterior álbum. Starcastle volvió a la carretera para actuar como teloneros de Boston, Rush, Journey, Manfred Mann y la ELO.

También dieron conciertos como cabeza de cartel desde Los Angeles a Miami. Desgraciadamente para Starcastle el panorama musical estaba cambiando dramáticamente: tanto el punk como el disco estaba calando fuerte a ambos lados del Atlántico. Por lo que se repensaron ir hacia un formato de música más amigable para la radio. Además estaban siendo presionados por su manager y la compañía discográfica para entregar un nuevo álbum.
Una compañía de discos está en el negocio para hacer dinero, nuestro manager está en el negocio para hacer dinero y estaban un poco hartos de que nos compararan con Yes. Pensaban que sería mejor que siguiéramos un camino más roquero. No estoy seguro si interpretamos correctamente la dirección que ellos pretendían, pero el hecho fue que nuestro estilo empezó a cambiar alejándonos de las raíces de la banda...la estructura de las canciones empezaron a cambiar"Stephen Hagler en las notas del CD
El pasarse todo el tiempo en la carretera no ayudaba en la composición de nuevos temas. Tenían una casa en Champaing donde algunos miembros vivían incluso en ella. Allí ensayaban y era el sitio ideal para componer.

Grabación
La grabación se tenía que hacer antes de final de año. No habían quedado satisfechos con el sonido de su anterior álbum y se quedaron bastante sorprendidos cuando la compañía de discos volvió a sugerir que fuera producido por Roy Thomas Baker. Finalmente accedieron y Roy voló desde Londres para comenzar a trabajar en el álbum que sería el último gran álbum de Starcastle: Citadel.

El siempre quería hacer las cosas de manera diferente. Una de las cosas que quería era que fuéramos a grabar a Inglaterra, y asombrosamente convenció a la compañía de discos de que una cosa buena. Fue muy divertido para nosotros porque conseguimos un viaje al Reino Unido y fue una tremenda experiencia grabar allí. Incluso quería que volviéramos a casa en el Concorde pero CBS no tragó, ja, ja."Stephen Hagler en las notas del CD

El álbum fue grabado en los Chipping Norton Recording Studios de Londres con el ingeniero Barry Hammond y mezclado en los Sarm Studios de Londres con el ingeniero Geoff Workman. Como quedaron insatisfechos de la mezcla de su anterior álbum, esta vez estuvieron más atentos de que sus puntos de vista se tuvieran en cuenta. El resultado fue globalmente mejor.

Lanzamiento
El álbum Citadel fue lanzado en octubre de 1977 con Epic (PE 34935). La funda fue adornada con una hermosa e intrincada ilustración cortesía de los hermanos Hildebrandt (Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, etc.).

Se promocionó modestamente en la radio con los temas "Can't Think Twice" y "Could This Be Love" y en la prensa. En el Reino Unido el periódico musical Sounds dio al álbum una brillante reseña. Geoff Barton soltó la ahora infame cita: Pomp Rock* Lives - Run For The Hills.
* Pomp Rock - Es un término anacrónico usado para vilipendiar cualquier banda que tuviera la audacia de incorporar ideas musicales grandiosas y exageradas en su catálogo. En los 70 se refería para describir un renacimiento musical sobre todo en Norteamérica (aunque no exclusivamente), un movimiento de espíritus libres que llevaban más lejos que nunca antes la escritura de canciones. Dos bandas eran pilares de dicho movimiento, Kansas y Styx, aunque también se incluiría Starcastle.

El álbum fue publicado también en Canadá, Reino Unido, Japón y Australia.
Se publicó un sencillo del álbum en Estados Unidos con los temas Shine On Brightly / Wings Of White.
Aunque las comparaciones con Yes todavía eran validas (en especial en la voz parecida a Jon Anderson) el álbum estaba más enfocado a canciones más comerciales como "Shine On Brightly", "Shadows Of Songs", "Why Have They Gone" y "Could This Be Love" que mostraban más afinidad a lo que hacía por ejemplo Camel. Las canciones eran más cortas para ser más amigables para la radio.
Las ventas continuaron reduciéndose, lo que marcaría el principio del fin para la banda.

Recepción
Paul Collins comentó en su reseña para AllMusic: ..ñla ilusión de Yes se mantiene, especialmente cuando entra la forma angular de Hagler, como en "Shadows of Song". "Change in Time" es el mejor de los números al estilo Yes, una pequeña melodía impulsiva con hermosos coros y pausas de sintetizador altísimas. Los dos números más interesantes, sin embargo, son "Can't Think Twice" y "Could This Be Love", intentos serios de melodías pegadizas del tipo Top 40 que reconsideran todo el sonido progresivo del grupo, y que mantienen los talentos del grupo bajo control al servicio de un enfoque para la radio poco desafiante.
Los Angeles Times calificó el álbum como "tan encantador que reaviva todas las grandes esperanzas anteriores para el grupo... Starcastle utiliza su material de origen como algo más que una prueba de buen gusto auditivo".

Opinión personal
Recientemente descubrí esta banda y es evidente la calidad de los músicos, dada su trayectoria de varios años. Aunque las críticas los acusaron de imitar a Yes, poseen una esencia distintiva de las bandas de rock progresivo estadounidenses. La abundancia de teclados y la voz del cantante parecida a la de Jon Anderson hace que en este álbum podamos seguir comparándolos con ellos. La disminución de ventas respecto su anterior álbum hizo que se plantearan hacer temas más optimistas, comerciales y adecuados para la radio, con lo pierden parte de su frescura progresiva, aunque el álbum se deja escuchar.
