Tras el fracaso del primer sencillo de Genesis The Silent Sun, su productor King continuó confiando en ellos y el 10 de mayo de 1968 lanzaron su segundo sencillo A Winter's Tale con Decca (nº de catálogo F 12775) que también vendió poco.

El sencillo A Winter's Tale

De igual manera que en el primer sencillo, Tony Banks y Peter Gabriel compusieron la canción A Winter's Tale a principios de 1968 para ser lanzada como segundo sencillo. Ambas canciones son canciones de amor, pero en "A Winter's Tale" la banda suena mucho más segura, especialmente en el coro. Al igual que en su predecesora, el enfoque de la canción se centra en la voz de Peter Gabriel. La voz joven, pero fuerte, de Gabriel ya insinúa lo que fue capaz de hacer más adelante en su carrera. La canción está enterrada bajo el arreglo de cuerdas como su predecesora para decepción de la banda. El master de la canción se grabaría a mediados de febrero de 1968.

El sencillo tuvo poca difusión en las ondas. Solo fue pinchado un par de veces. Pero las críticas fueron bastante entusiastas y el New Musical Express elogió el "crescendo pulsante" y las letras. Mike Rutherford recuerda en su autobiografía, que la banda pensó en cómo conseguir más difusión en las ondas. Peter Gabriel sugirió entregar el sencillo al presentador de radio Tony Blackburn personalmente. A Tony Banks se le dio la tarea de esperar fuera de Broadcasing House. Como estaba nervioso, se puso un poco agresivo cuando Blackburn salió, lo que debió asustarlo un poco.

Las ventas fueron escasas pero como el anterior, una copia original del sencillo es apreciada hoy en día.

Chris Stewart se marcha

Tras el segundo sencillo Chris salió de la banda por petición del productor King y del resto de los miembros de la banda que consideraban a Chris un batería deficiente. Peter Gabriel llegó a afirmar que Stewart "no era precisamente una máquina de seguir el ritmo". Ahora entiendo por qué se volvió a remezclar en 2006 el tema The Silent Sun añadiéndole una batería adicional.

Continuó con sus estudios. Su carrera en Genesis había sido una diversión y aprovechó la oportunidad.

Como curiosidad os cuento que fue de él. Los siguientes veinte años los pasó tocando en el circo de Sir Robert Fossett, esquilando ovejas en Suecia y trabajando en una granja de Sussex. Después viajó hasta China con el propósito de escribir una guía turística de viaje. También hizo un curso de aviación consiguiendo la licencia de piloto en Los Ángeles. Finalmente logró realizar su sueño, mudarse con su esposa Ana a un cortijo llamado "El Valero" en la ladera sur de Sierra Nevada, Granada en España, donde residen actualmente junto con su hija Chlöe. En este lugar ha escrito su best seller Entre limones. Es decir que finalmente su vocación fue la de escritor.

Tras este libro ha publicado El loro en el limonero (A Parrot In The Pepper Tree) en 2002, y Los almendros en flor (The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society) en 2006.

Entre sus últimas publicaciones tenemos Tres maneras de volcar un barco (Three Ways to Capsize a Boat: An Optimist Afloat) en 2010 y Los últimos tiempos del Club del Autobús (The Last Days Of The Bus Club) en 2015.
