Introducción
Este artículo está dedicado al EP Spot the Pigeon de la banda de rock progresivo Genesis publicado el 20 de mayo de 1977. Sus tres canciones fueron escritas originalmente para el octavo álbum de estudio del grupo, Wind & Wuthering (1976), pero no se incluyeron en la selección final de canciones. Fue el último lanzamiento de estudio con el guitarrista Steve Hackett antes de su salida de Genesis.

En anterior artículo comenzamos a comentar su siguiente álbum Wind & Wuthering que sería el último con la participación de Steve Hackett antes de su partida en 1977. Spot the Pigeon
Antecedentes y grabación
El título es una variación del concurso de fútbol Spot the Ball (la portada se asemeja a una foto de las usuales del concurso), reemplazando la palabra "pelota" por "paloma" para que el título vincule los temas de las dos primeras canciones.
Para el concurso Spot The Ball se elige una fotografía en la que se elimina la pelota y el juego consiste en adivinar la posible ubicación de ésta en la foto.

El EP fue grabado entre septiembre-octubre de 1976 en los Relight Studios, Hilvarenbeek, Países Bajos.
Contenido del EP
El EP comienza con "Match of the Day". Phil Collins comentó en 2004 sobre el tema: "Mirando hacia atrás ahora no fue nuestro mejor momento. Escribí una letra vergonzosa y la canción presentaba un intento de traer algunos de los ritmos más modernos de la época a Genesis, con resultados muy sospechosos".
El ligero "Pigeons" está impulsado por una pista de banjo ukelele de una sola nota que parodia al músico inglés George Formby. Steve Hackett comentó en 2009 que "lo que pasaba con 'Pigeons' era que era posible que la banda tocara una nota entera para todo el tema: ding-ding-ding-ding. Y eso fue invariable mientras el teclado cambiaba y [Banks] intentaba hacer tantos acordes diferentes como fuera posible".
Según Mike Rutherford, la banda pensó que la omisión de ambas canciones de Wind & Wuthering fue perjudicial, lo que llevó a intentos de hacer canciones más cortas en su siguiente álbum ...And Then There Were Three....
"Inside and Out" combina imágenes de folk y pop progresivo para lo que sería la última vez en la carrera de la banda con Hackett como miembro activo. Desde su lanzamiento en 1977, Hackett se mantuvo firme en que la canción ejemplificaba el sonido de múltiples capas de la banda y debería haber sido incluida en el LP Wind & Wuthering lanzado en diciembre de 1976. "Creo que es una de las canciones más fuertes que no llegó al álbum", le dijo a Vintage Rock en 2017. "Creo que debería haber sido porque tiene un sonido muy hermoso. Desde el primer momento, tiene esa cosa multi-jangle de Genesis en la que suena como una guitarra, pero es un montón de guitarras que tocan lo mismo". La primera sección, "Inside (Dentro)", se refiere a un hombre que es encarcelado injustamente por violación. La segunda sección "Out (Fuera)", es un pasaje instrumental que representa la libertad del hombre.

Lanzamiento
El EP en 7" fue publicado en el Reino Unido el 20 de mayo de 1977. El EP alcanzó el puesto 14 en la lista británica permaneciendo 7 semanas en lista.

También fue publicado en Irlanda, Alemania, Países Bajos, Italia, Escandinavia, Francia, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Brasil.
No fue lanzado en los Estados Unidos ya que el mercado de EPs nunca despegó allí.
En Canadá fue publicado en 12" incluyendo una edición limitada en vinilo azul con Atlantic Records (el distribuidor de la banda en Norteamérica). Las copias canadienses fueron importadas a los Estados Unidos por lo que estuvo disponible en las tiendas que vendían ese tipo de material.

Recepción
La reseña retrospectiva de AllMusic elogió la composición del EP por volver al sonido del primer álbum de Genesis, Trespass, pero concluyó su reseña con: "Spot the Pigeon nunca ha sido un lanzamiento popular o incluso muy accesible en los EE. UU. Por supuesto, hay una razón para esto: simplemente no es muy emocionante".

Opinión personal
En el tema Inside and Out encontramos la última oportunidad de disfrutar del rock progresivo del Genesis con Steve Hackett. Es una pena que no se hubiera incluido en el álbum Wind & Wuthering. Los otros dos temas Match Of The Day y Pigeons son temas pop divertidos que presagian lo que está por venir cuando Genesis queda reducido a un trío.
Reediciones
Fue reeditado en CD en 1988 con Virgin. No ha vuelto a ser reeditado en CD.
El EP fue reeditado en vinilo para el Record Store Day 2012 por Audio Fidelity de nuevo en vinilo azul reproduciendo a 33 1/3 rpm en el lado A y 45 rpm en el lado B.

Actuaciones en directo
Una actuación en Capital Radio el 15 de julio de 1979 incluyó el tema Pigeons.
Genesis interpretó Inside and Out varias veces en la gira Wind & Wuthering en 1977.
Versiones
Steve Hackett hizo una versión de Inside and Out en el mismo año que se celebró el cuadragésimo aniversario de Wind & Wuthering documentada en su álbum en vivo Wuthering Nights: Live in Birmingham de 2018.
