Introducción

Amon Düül II es uno de los grupos fundadores de la escena krautrock alemana. En un anterior artículo comentamos sus comienzos hasta la publicación de su primer álbum Phallus Dei (lat: «Falo de Dios»), que se considera un hito en la historia del rock alemán: 1969: Los comienzos de Amon Düül II

Los composición de Amon Düül II por aquel entonces era: Chris Karrer (violín, guitarra, guitarra de 12 cuerdas, voz), Peter Leopold (batería, piano), Falk Rogner (órgano y sintetizadores), John Weinzierl (guitarras, piano, voz), Lothar Meid (bajo)  Karl-Heinz Hausmann (ingeniería, electrónica), Danny Fichelscher (batería, congas) y Renate Knaup (voz). 

En este artículo nos ocupamos del que sería su cuarto álbum de estudio Carnival in Babylon.

Historia

Carnival in Babylon fue grabado en 1971 en el Bavaria Studio (con Peter Kramper como ingeniero) y remezclado en studio 70 (con Jürgen Koppers como ingeniero). Fue producido por Olaf Kübler y la propia banda. El diseño original de la portada y las fotos fueron de F.U. Rogner.

Contraportada del álbum

El álbum fue lanzado en 1972 en Alemania con United Artists Records (UAS 29 327 I).

El álbum anuncia una ligera nueva dirección musical tomada por la banda. Este álbum está dominado por canciones más cortas con la omnipresente y hermosa voz de Renate Knaup. Un trabajo más convencional con algunas baladas prog-folk memorables. 

Comentario de Nick Burton sobre el álbum en Allmusic: Presenta un enfoque musical menos experimental que las grabaciones anteriores, pero sin embargo distintivo y de amplio alcance en su esfera de influencias. El aspecto casi épico de los trabajos anteriores se ha reducido aquí, pero las pistas llenas de guitarra como "C.I.D. in Uruk", "Ballad of the Shimmering Sands" y "Kronwinkl 12" usan elementos dispares de folk y hard rock con astucia. La banda mueve la música con un barrido majestuoso salpicado por el trabajo de guitarra de Chris Karrer y John Weinzierl.

Mi opinión personal: La canción comienza con unos coros que me recuerdan a un himno hippie hasta que comienza la guitarra eléctrica y se convierte en una pieza de rock progresivo con aires folk. Un tema muy agradable de escuchar.

Una versión editada de la canción se incluyó como cara B del sencillo con The Tables Are Turned.

Mi opinión personal: Mas rock psicodélico que progresivo que me recuerda los primeros Pink Floyd.

Parece que el tema se originó en una jam psicodélica titulada Kronwinkl 13 de 1971 que está recogida en el siguiente video. El riff de guitarra sería tomado para el tema Kronwinkl 12 pero por otra cosa no se parece a la jam original.

Mi opinión personal: Guiño a Hawkwind en el título. Rock psicodélico en el estilo propio de Amon Düül II. Buenos solos de guitarra que me recuerdan a Pink Floyd y efectos electrónicos psicodélicos.

Mi opinión sobre el álbum

En este álbum encontramos mezcla el rock psicodélico, folk rock, rock progresivo, art rock y rock espacial. Tiene guiños a Pink Floyd y Hawkwind. Es mas suave que los anteriores sobre todo por la voz de Renate.
