Kansas es una banda de rock estadounidense que se hizo popular en la década de 1970 inicialmente en las listas de rock orientadas a álbumes y más tarde con sencillos exitosos como "Carry On Wayward Son" y "Dust in the Wind". La banda ha producido nueve álbumes de oro, tres álbumes multiplatino (Leftoverture 4×, Point of Know Return 4× y The Best of Kansas 4×), otro álbum de estudio de platino (Monolith), un álbum doble en vivo de platino (Two for the Show) y un sencillo de ventas millonarias, "Dust in the Wind". Kansas apareció en las listas del Billboard durante más de 200 semanas a lo largo de las décadas de 1970 y 1980 y tocó en conciertos con entradas agotadas en América del Norte, Europa y Japón. "Carry On Wayward Son" fue la segunda canción más tocada en la radio de rock clásico de Estados Unidos en 1995 y la número 1 en 1997.

Este artículo lo dedicamos al tercer álbum de la banda estadounidense Kansas, Masque.
Historia
El lanzamiento de su segundo álbum Song For America en marzo de 1975 le dio suficiente popularidad para llenar los conciertos. El 29 de enero de 1975 comenzaron una gira por Estados Unidos como teloneros de Queen. El repertorio ya incluía tres canciones del nuevo álbum "Song for America", "Down the Road" y "Lonely Street". El último concierto con Queen fue el 6 de abril en el Paramount Theatre de Seattle.

Grabación
La banda formada por el guitarrista Kerry Livgren, el bajista David Hope, el batería Phil Ehart, el cantante y teclista Steve Walsh, el violinista Robert Steinhardt y el guitarrista Richard Williams grabó el que sería su tercer álbum de estudio, Masque en el Studio in the Country, Bogalusa, Louisiana. Actúo como ingeniero de sonido, Lee Peterzell. La mezcla se realizó en el mismo estudio.

Producción
Masqye fue producido su ex compañero de banda en White Clover, Jeff Glixman, quien produciría todos sus álbumes desde Song for America hasta Two for the Show (octubre de 1978), volviendo al timón para Freaks of Nature de 1995.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en los Estados Unidos en septiembre de 1975 con el sello Kirshner. En Europa se publicaría dos años después, en 1977. Alcanzó el puesto 70 en el Billboard 200 permaneciendo 20 semanas en lista. Es el segundo álbum consecutivo de Kansas en alcanzar el top 70. Aproximadamente 250,000 unidades se vendieron en cuestión de meses.
Al igual que los otros dos primeros lanzamientos de álbumes de Kansas, Masque atrajo un nuevo interés comercial debido al éxito de platino del cuarto y quinto álbum de estudio de la banda: Leftoverture (1976) y Point of Know Return (1977). El disco logró la certificación de oro por parte de la Asociación de la Industria de Grabación de Estados Unidos (RIAA) por más de medio millón de unidades vendidas en 1977.

Recepción
AllMusic, en una revisión de Bret Adams, comentó: El tercer álbum de Kansas, Masque, es un esfuerzo líricamente oscuro cortesía de la melancólica composición del guitarrista / tecladista Kerry Livgren. Musicalmente, Masque presagia las melodías apretadas y la interacción instrumental en los próximos dos álbumes, Leftoverture y Point of Know Return, que juntos sirven como la cima de la visión de Kansas. La banda merece más respeto del que recibe por incorporar el hard rock británico y el rock progresivo para convertirse en la única banda de rock progresivo de los Estados Unidos notable durante el apogeo del género en la década de 1970. El trabajo de violín de Robbie Steinhardt ciertamente ayudó a darle a Kansas un sonido distintivo.
El sencillo It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man)
La canción It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man) fue publicada como el sencillo principal del álbum en febrero de 1976 en Estados Unidos (era su cuarto sencillo). Se publicó con el tema It's You en la cara B. Una versión promocional del sencillo llevaba It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man) en ambas caras, en una en estéreo y en la otra en mono. El sencillo se publicó solo en Estados Unidos. El tema no llegó a ser popular y no llegó a las listas.

La canción fue remezclada para su lanzamiento como sencillo, incluyendo voces invitadas adicionales y segmentos muy diferentes de la versión del álbum. Este tema fue compuesto por el cantante y teclista Steve Walsh.
Según el crítico de Allmusic, Bret Adams, especifica que «t Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man) es el tema inicial y además atípico con respecto del resto del disco». También menciona que «la canción es claramente sencilla pero con una melodía pop/rock que está aderezado con algunas notas de saxofón», del que se encarga Earl Lon Price.

Opinión personal
Muchos acusan este álbum de malo, pero para mi es bastante bueno para recomendar la escucha. Es un poco menos progresivo que el anterior, siendo más roquero, aunque está claro que es un puente entre Song for America y Leftoverture. Quizás estuvo menos inspirado que el anterior por el poco tiempo trascurrido entre ambos lanzamientos y por la apretada agenda de conciertos. El álbum comienza con el roquero "It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man)" que es un intento de hacer un sencillo exitoso pero les salió el tiro por la culata. Le sigue la también roquera "Two Cents Worth", pero esta me gusta más por su originalidad, buen rock sureño. "Icarus – Borne on Wings of Steel" es una joya del progresivo gracias a la combinación de violín y sintetizador, una de las canciones que más me gusta de Kansas. "All the World" es una bonita balada progresiva y la segunda canción que más me gusta del álbum. La cara B comienza con la roquera Child of Innocence. Le sigue "It's You" con un ritmo muy animado. Y llegamos a la roquera Mysteries and Mayhem en la que prueban nuevos sonidos, pero no suenan mucho a Kansas. Y el álbum cierra con The Pinacle, otra joya del progresivo y mi tercera favorita.

Fue publicado por primera vez en CD en 1993. En 2001 se publicó remasterizado con dos bonus tracks.
En 2013 fue reeditado en vinilo de 180g en Estados Unidos y en 2018 en edición limitada en vinilo trasparente rojo en Europa.
