Manfred Sepse Lubowitz (Johannesburgo, Gauteng, Sudáfrica, 21 de octubre de 1940) conocido como Manfred Mann, es un músico de rock británico nacido en Sudáfrica.
Estudió música en la Universidad de Witwatersrand. Comenzó como teclista de jazz en su país natal y continuó en Inglaterra, donde se radicó en 1961. Compaginó la actuación con su actividad como profesor y redactor de artículos, los cuales firmaba bajo el seudónimo de Manfred Manne. De ahí derivó poco después el nombre Manfred Mann.
Del jazz pasó al rhythm & blues. En 1962 formó la banda Mann Hugg Blues Brothers, que en 1963 pasó a denominarse Manfred Mann. En 1969 el grupo dio un giro hacia el jazz experimental y cambió su nombre por Manfred Mann Chapter Three. Solo un año después se convirtió en Manfred Mann's Earth Band, fusionando su evolución musical hacia el entonces naciente rock progresivo con un alto peso específico de sintetizador, traspasando el milenio hasta nuestros días. The Earth Band combina el enfoque estilístico del rock progresivo con el sintetizador Moog influenciado por el jazz de Mann y su agudo oído para la melodía. Además de producir su propio material, un elemento básico de la música de la banda y las actuaciones en vivo desde el principio también ha sido confiar en versiones de canciones de otros artistas modernos de pop / rock, especialmente Bob Dylan y Bruce Springsteen, en su estilo de rock progresivo.

Formación de una nueva banda
Manfred Mann sintió que Manfred Mann Chapter Three había sufrido demasiadas reglas autoimpuestas, estaba frustrado por tener que tocar solo las composiciones de Mike Hugg y por no ser una empresa económicamente factible (debido a la cantidad de músicos involucrados). Todo ello fueron suficientes razones para formar un nuevo grupo, que estaba abierto a canciones de fuera de la banda (como los grupos anteriores de Mann) y se desarrolló debido a los diferentes antecedentes musicales de sus miembros en lugar de adherirse a un estricto concepto musical.
Así en 1971 formó la Earth Band. La formación original consistía en Mick Rogers (guitarra y voz), Manfred Mann (teclados, sintetizador Minimoog y voz), Colin Pattenden (bajo) y Chris Slade (batería y voz). Slade luego sería parte de grupos como AC/DC, Uriah Heep, The Firm o Asia. En septiembre de 1971, se eligió un nuevo nombre. Manfred Mann sugirió un título que contuviera "banda" (que casi rima con "Mann") y después de considerar los gustos de "Arm Band", "Head Band" y "Elastic Band". Chris Slade sugirió "Earth Band", un nombre relacionado con el estilo musical originalmente sencillo de la banda y el movimiento ecológico en curso en ese momento.

Grabación y lanzamiento del primer álbum

Fue publicado el 24 de enero de 1972 en Estados Unidos con Polydor, donde se vendió modestamente y estuvo en las listas durante seis semanas en el Billboard 200, alcanzando el número 138 el 18 de marzo.

El álbum fue recibido con críticas positivas de los críticos estadounidenses. Henry Edwards de High Fidelity dijo que la Earth Band había demostrado ser muy superior a otros grupos en la "British Blues Invasion of the Seventies" al mostrar una dedicación a la música en lugar de hacer alarde de sus habilidades individuales. Su segundo álbum Glorified Magnified fue producido por Manfred Mann y Dave Hadfield (excepto "It's All Over..." por Manfred Mann y Tom McGuinness) en Maximum Sound Studios, Londres en 1972.
El álbum fue lanzado en octubre de 1972 en Estados Unidos con Polydor. En Europa fue lanzado con Phillips. En el Reino Unido fue lanzado el 29 de septiembre de 1972.

Poco a poco van consolidando su sonido. La canción "One Way Glass" ya había sido publicada en el primer álbum con Chapter Three. A esta versión le dan un tono progresivo al nuevo estilo de la banda.

Bruce Eder de Allmusic comentó: El segundo álbum de Manfred Mann's Earth Band que se lanzó en 1972, Glorified Magnified es un álbum de rock pesado tan sólido como es probable que encuentres otros de esa época, y todavía se mantiene actual tres décadas después, principalmente porque estos tipos son más inteligentes que la música que están tocando y no les importa complacer su gusto y su destreza.
