Manfred Sepse Lubowitz (Johannesburgo, Gauteng, Sudáfrica, 21 de octubre de 1940) conocido como Manfred Mann, es un músico de rock británico nacido en Sudáfrica.
Estudió música en la Universidad de Witwatersrand. Comenzó como teclista de jazz en su país natal y continuó en Inglaterra, donde se radicó en 1961. Compaginó la actuación con su actividad como profesor y redactor de artículos, los cuales firmaba bajo el seudónimo de Manfred Manne. De ahí derivó poco después el nombre Manfred Mann.
Del jazz pasó al rhythm & blues. En 1962 formó la banda Mann Hugg Blues Brothers, que en 1963 pasó a denominarse Manfred Mann. En 1969 el grupo dio un giro hacia el jazz experimental y cambió su nombre por Manfred Mann Chapter Three. Solo un año después se convirtió en Manfred Mann's Earth Band, fusionando su evolución musical hacia el entonces naciente rock progresivo con un alto peso específico de sintetizador, traspasando el milenio hasta nuestros días. The Earth Band combina el enfoque estilístico del rock progresivo con el sintetizador Moog influenciado por el jazz de Mann y su agudo oído para la melodía. Además de producir su propio material, un elemento básico de la música de la banda y las actuaciones en vivo desde el principio también ha sido confiar en versiones de canciones de otros artistas modernos de pop / rock, especialmente Bob Dylan y Bruce Springsteen, en su estilo de rock progresivo.

Grabación y lanzamiento del tercer álbum
El tercer álbum Messin', como todos los álbumes de Earth Band, contiene una mezcla de temas originales y versiones.
"Buddah" también apareció en el álbum doble de Vertigo Suck It and See, junto con canciones de los entonces compañeros de sello Kraftwerk, Jade Warrior y Sensational Alex Harvey Band, entre otros.
El álbum fue producido por Manfred Mann y grabado por John Edwards en Maximum Sound Studios, Londres en 1973.
En el Reino Unido, el álbum fue lanzado el 15 de junio de 1973 por Vertigo.

Para el lanzamiento en los Estados Unidos, el álbum fue retitulado Get Your Rocks Off y la canción "Pretty Good" fue incluida en lugar de "Black and Blue", aparentemente porque esta última trataba sobre la esclavitud y se consideraba inadecuada para el mercado estadounidense. Ambas pistas fueron incluidas en la reedición remasterizada de 1998. Bajo este título, el álbum apenas llegó al Billboard 200 de los Estados Unidos, pasando solo dos semanas en las listas y alcanzando el número 196 el 30 de junio de 1973.

Bruce Eder de Allmusic comentó: El tema principal Messin' es bastante intenso y envolvente desde sus primeros compases. También es maldito tópico y serio, por todos los espíritus libres del rock & roll y las complejidades del rock progresivo que entran en la interpretación. Y el resultado es un todo fascinante, con algunas florituras de teclado asombrosas del propio Manfred Mann...Todo el disco sale en algún lugar en medio del art rock y el heavy metal, junto con (sorprendentemente) folk tópico, y no violenta ninguno de los géneros.

Su cuarto álbum Solar Fire fue producido por Manfred Mann's Earth Band en los estudios The Workhouse, Old Kent Road, Londres en 1973.

El álbum fue lanzado en enero de 1974 en Estados Unidos con Polydor. En Europa fue lanzado con Bronze. En el Reino Unido fue lanzado el 30 de noviembre de 1973.
Pasó 15 semanas en las listas Billboard 200, alcanzando el número 96 el 11 de mayo de 1974. Inicialmente estaba destinado a ser un álbum conceptual con una adaptación completa de The Planets Suite, pero el heredero de Gustav Holst, que previamente había dado permiso para la adaptación de "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" en el exitoso sencillo "Joybringer", no permitió que esto sucediera, por lo que la banda hizo su propio álbum "cósmico" utilizando principalmente temas originales, aunque la canción más conocida es la composición (muy reelaborada) de Bob Dylan "Father of Day, Father of Night", que Earth Band sigue interpretando en vivo hasta el día de hoy y sigue siendo una canción popular en la radio de rock.
