En este artículo comentamos los comienzos de la banda Eloy hasta el lanzamiento de su primer álbum homónimo en 1971.
Eloy es una banda alemana de rock progresivo formada en 1969, cuyo estilo va desde el rock espacial al rock sinfónico. Su nombre proviene de la novela La máquina del tiempo, de H. G. Wells, en la que los Eloi, que son una de las estirpes humanas del futuro, llevan una existencia casi paradisíaca.
Historia
El guitarrista de Hannover Frank Bornemann fundó ELOY en 1969. Planeaba tocar sus propias composiciones, un movimiento bastante audaz en Alemania en ese momento. Bornemann describió el origen del nombre de la banda así:
Wells describe en su libro la situación de la humanidad unos 800.000 años después, y 'Eloy' es una raza humana en su historia. La historia de Eloy en Wells ha tenido un nuevo comienzo con la ayuda del viajero del tiempo. En cierto modo, fue un nuevo comienzo para la raza humana. Las bandas de rock alemanas a finales de la década de 1960 tocaron principalmente versiones de otras bandas en lugar de tocar sus propias composiciones. Los contratos discográficos para bandas alemanas eran absolutamente raros y las bandas alemanas en general se consideraban bandas de segunda clase en su propio país. En ese momento fue un gran esfuerzo para una banda alemana salir con solo sus propias composiciones. Fue un comienzo en un futuro desconocido, y desde este punto de vista, comparable a la raza humana en la historia de Wells. Es por eso que tuve la idea de nombrar a la banda 'Eloy'Frank Bornemann
Después de cambiar la alineación un par de veces, llegó a conseguir una formación capaz para seguir este camino. En ese momento, la banda estaba formada por el cantante y pianista Erich Schriever y el guitarrista Manfred Wieczorke, con Wolfgang Stöcker en el bajo y Helmut Draht en la batería proporcionando la columna vertebral rítmica. Ganaron un concurso regional de bandas y tuvieron la oportunidad de grabar canciones en un estudio por primera vez. El resultado fue su primer sencillo, lanzado en 1970, que comprende las canciones "Walk Alone" y "Daybreak". Los temas no fueron incluidos en el que sería su primer álbum inicialmente pero si como bonus tracks en las reediciones en CD de 1997 y 2008.

En 1971, ELOY consiguió su primer contrato de grabación con Philips y fue a Hamburgo para grabar su álbum debut con el ingeniero de sonido Conny Plank (que también estaba trabajando con Kraftwerk, The Scorpions y Jane en ese momento). El álbum fue grabado en abril de 1971 en los estudios Star-Musik. Las letras a veces críticas sociales se reflejaron en la icónica portada del álbum plegable.

Un álbum muy bien conjuntado, muy rockero. Tines atisbos de rock porgresivo del que harán más adelante.
