Introducción

Hawkwind es una banda de rock inglesa conocida como uno de los primeros grupos de rock espacial (space rock).  Desde su formación en noviembre de 1969 en Ladbroke Grove, Londres, Hawkwind ha pasado por muchas cambios en su formación y ha incorporado muchos estilos diferentes en su música, incluyendo hard rock, rock progresivo y rock psicodélico. También son considerados como una influyente banda proto-punk. Sus letras contienen temáticas acerca de lo urbano y la ciencia ficción; de hecho, el escritor Michael Moorcock ha colaborado en las letras de algunos temas.

Muchos músicos, bailarines y escritores han colaborado con la banda desde sus inicios. Los músicos notables que han participado en Hawkwind incluyen a Lemmy, Ginger Baker, Robert Calvert, Nik Turner y Huw Lloyd-Langton. Sin embargo, la banda está más estrechamente asociada con su fundador, cantante, compositor y guitarrista Dave Brock, que es el único miembro original que continúa.

Hawkwind son mejor conocidos por la canción "Silver Machine", que se convirtió en un éxito número tres en el Reino Unido en 1972, pero consiguieron más éxitos con "Urban Guerrilla" (otro éxito Top 40) y "Shot Down in the Night". La banda tuvo una serie de veintidós de sus álbumes en las listas de éxitos en el Reino Unido desde 1971 hasta 1993.

Fue grabado para una sesión de la BBC Maida Vale el 19 de mayo de 1971 para el programa Sounds of the Seventies, una versión bootleg de la sesión se puede encontrar en The Text of Festival. 

Shouldn't Do That

Fue el bis para el show de Space Ritual pero omitido de ese álbum, apareciendo más tarde en 1976 en el álbum recopilatorio Roadhawks y en la edición en CD de 2007 de Space Ritual como bonus track:

Ha sido parte del set en vivo en varios momentos a lo largo de su carrera, cuyas versiones se pueden encontrar en The Business Trip (1994) y Spaced Out in London (2004).

   Mantiene el tono psicodélico del anterior álbum

"You Know You're Only Dreaming" utiliza el riff y la sensación de "Jackson-Kent Blues" de Steve Miller Band de su álbum Number 5, un grupo que Brock ha reconocido como una influencia.

Mi opinión sobre el tema: 

   Tema de rock espacial. Es el que más me gusta del álbum. Me recuerda el estilo de Pink Floyd.

B1 Master of the Universe  6:17

"Master of the Universe" fue escrita por Brock y Turner (quien canta la voz principal), aunque Anderson sostiene que también debería haber recibido el crédito de un escritor por escribir el riff principal. Es la única pista del álbum que podría interpretarse como que líricamente tiene un tema espacial, pero también puede ser vista como antropocéntrica.

Mi opinión sobre el tema: 

   Muy buen riff de guitarra. Muy rockero.

"We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago" es un tema acústico con guitarra de 12 cuerdas con una jam de banda en la sección central y sus letras lamentan la dirección de la sociedad.

   Otro tema muy psicodélico.

"Children of the Sun" es un tema de guitarra acústica, aunque después del pasaje vocal el riff pesado repetido se ve aumentado por guitarras eléctricas y bajo. El riff es familiar.

   Me recuerda un tema de Jethro Tull

Mi opinión personal sobre el álbum:

Se nota cierta evolución del rock psicodélico al rock espacial. Se nota que es mas comercial.
