En este artículo comentamos el álbum Something Magic de Procol Harum publicado en 1977.
Procol Harum fue una banda de rock inglesa formada en Southend-on-Sea, Essex, en 1967. Su grabación más conocida es el sencillo de 1967 "A Whiter Shade of Pale", uno de los pocos sencillos que ha vendido más de 10 millones de copias. Aunque se destaca por su influencia barroca y clásica, la música de Procol Harum se describe como rock psicodélico y proto-progresivo con toques de blues, R&B y soul.
En 2018, la banda fue honrada por el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll cuando "A Whiter Shade of Pale" fue incluida en la nueva categoría de sencillos. Anteriormente fueron nominados como intérpretes en 2012.

Un anterior artículo lo dedicamos a su séptimo álbum de estudio (octavo si contamos uno en vivo), Exotic Birds and Fruit publicado en abril de 1974. La banda regresó en este álbum a sus raíces de rock duro. Reid dijo que el grupo hizo un intento consciente de "disipar esa imagen sinfónica" a la que habían estado unidos y tiene un sonido similar a su debut. Por fin Procol Harum había entrado en un periodo con una formación estable, tras unos años de muchos cambios en la formación.

Un anterior artículo lo dedicamos a su octavo álbum de estudio, el noveno en el computo global incluyendo uno en directo, que se tituló simplemente Procol's Ninth y se publicó en 1975. Los cambios de personal en la banda habían contribuido a la disminución de las ventas. Ahora que parecía estabilizarse otra vez la formación, se volvería a remodelar tras la publicación del álbum y tras un último concierto en el Rainbow Theatre de Londres.

Grabación y lanzamiento del álbum

En 1976 la banda se reagrupó para grabar su último álbum de la década de 1970, Something Magic. Para ello, el vocalista, compositor y pianista Gary Brooker volvió a reorganizar la banda: puso al tecladista Chris Copping al bajo considerando que lo hacía mejor que Alan Cartwright y éste dejó la banda. Para sustituir a Copping en los teclados se incorporó Pete Solley.

Como los productores Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller, no estaban disponibles tuvieron que buscar unos nuevos. Eligieron a Ron y Howie Albert también conocidos como los Albert Brothers que trabajaban en los estudios Criteria de Miami.

Procol Harum voló a Miami con material más que suficiente para su álbum. Sin embargo, los hermanos Albert rechazaron cinco de los temas, dejando solo cuatro del material que el grupo tenía la intención de usar.
Brooker ofreció entonces el tema épico "The Worm and The Tree", una suite del letrista Keith Reid con la que Brooker había estado trabajando de forma intermitente durante varios años. La letra según Reid trataba sobre "cómo la prensa trató de disolver la banda". La composición musical y los arreglos orquestales se completaron apresuradamente en el estudio debido a la creciente presión por parte de los productores.
Con "The Worm and The Tree" completado Brooker se lo mostró a los hermanos Albert, quienes la aprobaron (una sorpresa, dado que tenía mucho en común con la épica pieza de rock orquestal/progresivo "In Held Twas In I" de Shine on Brightly).

Brooker recurrió al arreglista de Miami Mike Lewis para completar los arreglos orquestales de la canción principal "Something Magic" y al miembro de la banda Chris Copping para completar el arreglo de viento madera para "Skating on Thin Ice".

El guitarrista Mick Grabham ofreció su única composición, "The Mark of the Claw" con letras de Reid, para ayudar a completar el álbum.
Los hermanos Albert insistieron en que el baterista, B.J. Wilson, usara una pista de clic* para el álbum, una demanda inusual dado su trabajo en los lanzamientos anteriores de la banda.
* Una pista de clic es un metrónomo que se utiliza para mantener el ritmo de los bateristas y otros músicos durante las actuaciones en directo y las grabaciones en estudio. Los músicos escuchan estas pistas a través de auriculares o cascos.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 25 de febrero de 1977. En el Reino Unido no llegó a las listas. Fue precedido por el sencillo "Wizard Man", respaldado por el instrumental "Backgammon" de Gary Brooker, el cual tampoco llegó a las listas.

En Canadá, alcanzó el número 84. Debutó en el número 13 en Dinamarca, antes de salir del Top 20.
Después de que este álbum fue lanzado, Copping dejó la banda. Dee Murray (bajista de Elton John) lo reemplazó para la gira norteamericana de promoción. La gira terminó en mayo, y al mes siguiente Grabham anunció que dejaba la banda, alegando que había estado "generalmente insatisfecho con mi papel... durante algunos meses". La banda tocó un último concierto en octubre cuando "A Whiter Shade of Pale" co-ganó el premio al Sencillo del Año en los Brit Awards de 1977.

Something Magic seguiría siendo el último álbum lanzado por Procol Harum hasta 1991, cuando Gary Brooker se reunió con Keith Reid, Robin Trower y Matthew Fisher (el baterista B.J. Wilson había muerto antes de la reunión) para el álbum The Prodigal Stranger.
Recepción
Something Magic no tuvo una buena recepción crítica.
En una revisión retrospectiva, William Ruhlmann de AllMusic le dio al álbum dos estrellas y media de cinco y comentó las razones que llevaron al debacle de la banda.
Reediciones
En 1995 fue publicado por primera vez en CD en una edición remasterizada.
En la edición en CD de 2000 con Repertoire se incluyó además dos bonus tracks, correspondientes a los temas aparecidos en el sencillo Wizard Man.
Salvo reeditó toda la discografía de Procol Harum en 2009, remasterizada con bonus tracks. Something Magic fue remasterizado por Nick Robbins. Los bonus tracks incluían el lado B "Backgammon", así como una demo de dos temas tocados en vivo por la banda pero rechazados para el álbum: "You'd Better Wait" y "This Old Dog". Los bonus tracks fueron seleccionados por Brooker y Reid para la reedición.
En 2020 se publicó una edición expandida de dos CD con Esoteric que incluía una grabación en vivo para el programa de radio "In Concert" de BBC Radio One en el Golder's Green Hippodrome el 12 de marzo de 1977.

Opinión personal
Este álbum supuso la debacle para Procol Harum y les costó la separación. Es una historia que se repite muchas veces en aquella época, a otras bandas de rock progresivo les ocurrió algo semejante. Las razones son consabidas: el auge del punk, los críticos tildando a las bandas progresivas de dinosaurios... Y las bandas progresivas buscando una forma de sobrevivir. Procol Harum lo intentó yendo a Miami a grabar el álbum con unos nuevos productores pero el intento resulto fallido. The Worm & the Tree, la épica suite que ocupa la cara dos es verdaderamente sinfónica pero suena a viejo. Mejoraría si Brooker la cantara en vez de recitarla. El tema que más me gusta es Strangers In Space que tiene aires de rock espacial. El tema que da título al álbum es también bastante sinfónico en el estilo Procol Harum clásico y sería mi segundo favorito.
