Steely Dan es una banda de rock estadounidense fundada en 1971 en Nueva York por los miembros principales Walter Becker (guitarras, bajo, coros) y Donald Fagen (teclados, voz principal). Inicialmente, la banda tenía una alineación estable, pero en 1974, Becker y Fagen retiraron a la banda de las actuaciones en vivo para convertirse en una banda solo de estudio, optando por grabar con un elenco giratorio de músicos de sesión. Rolling Stone los ha llamado "los antihéroes musicales perfectos para los años setenta".

Combinando elementos de rock, jazz, música latina, R&B, blues y una producción de estudio sofisticada con letras crípticas e irónicas, la banda disfrutó de un éxito comercial y de crítica desde principios de la década de 1970 hasta su separación en 1981.
Después de que el grupo se disolvió en 1981, Becker y Fagen trabajaron esporádicamente en proyectos en solitario durante la década de 1980, aunque un seguimiento de culto permaneció dedicado al trabajo del grupo. Desde que se reunió en 1993, Steely Dan ha realizado giras constantes y ha lanzado dos álbumes de nuevo material,

Los sencillos del álbum
El sencillo Show Biz Kids
El 27 de julio de 1973 se publicó con ABC el que sería el cuarto sencillo de Steely Dan, Show Biz Kids / Razor Boy, el cual serviría de promoción para el álbum Countdown to Ecstasy. En el Reino Unido se publicó el 31 de agosto de 1973 con el sello Probe.

La versión del sencillo de Show Biz Kids difiere de la del álbum porque las estaciones de radio en los Estados Unidos tenían limitada en los años 70 la duración de las canciones a cuatro minutos máximo. De la versión del álbum de 5:26 la duración quedó reducida a 3:59.
La canción alcanzó el puesto número 61 en la lista estadounidense Billboard Hot 100 en 1973 y lo que supuso un peor resultado que los sencillos anteriores.

Cash Box dijo que la canción tiene un "coro infeccioso entregado al hit Coconut de Nilsson".
En el Reino Unido no llegó a las listas.

El sencillo My Old School
En octubre de 1973, se publicaría en Estados Unidos el sencillo My Old School / Pearl Of The Quarter, el cual sería el segundo correspondiente al álbum Countdown to Ecstasy y el quinto de la banda. En el Reino Unido fue publicado el 9 de noviembre de 1973.
La versión de My Old School del sencillo fue recortada hasta 4:15.

La letra de la canción cuenta la historia de una redada de drogas en mayo de 1969 en el Bard College, llamado "Annandale" en la letra de la canción. El incidente ocurrió mientras Donald Fagen y Walter Becker eran estudiantes allí, y la canción menciona cómo una conocida los había traicionado a "Daddy Gee" (G. Gordon Liddy, el por aquel entonces fiscal del distrito). Según un artículo de Pittsburgh Post-Gazette de 2014, 44 personas fueron arrestadas, incluido Becker, cuyo largo cabello fue cortado en la cárcel de Poughkeepsie. El resultado de la canción es que el cantante jura que "nunca volverá" a la universidad hasta que "California caiga al mar". Fagen rompió su promesa de no volver. Regresó a Bard College cuando recibió un título honorario de Doctor en Artes en 1985.

La canción está en la tonalidad de sol mayor. La pista de estudio original cuenta con un solo de guitarra de Jeff Baxter.
La canción alcanzó el puesto número 63 en la lista estadounidense Billboard Hot 100 en 1973 y lo que supuso un peor resultado que los sencillos anteriores.
Cash Box describió la canción como una "desviación del estandar habitual del grupo, pero definitivamente una pista que va a tener a los programadores y oyentes zumbando".

La canción de apertura "Bodhisattva" es una parodia de la idea de que la eliminación de las posesiones de uno es un requisito previo para la iluminación espiritual. Su título se refiere a los Bodhisattva, aquellos de la creencia de que han alcanzado la perfección espiritual pero permanecen en el mundo material para ayudar a los demás.
