Este artículo lo dedicamos a la banda británica Uriah Heep y su sexto álbum de estudio, Sweet Freedom, publicado en 1973.
Uriah Heep es una banda de rock formada en Londres en 1969, la cual es considerada como "uno de los grupos más populares de principios de los 70".
Uriah Heep formaron parte de la escena del rock de principios de la década de 1970 y han sido conocidos como los principales pioneros de los géneros de hard rock, heavy metal y rock progresivo. La banda ha vendido más de 40 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo, con más de 4 millones de ventas en los Estados Unidos, donde sus canciones más conocidas incluyen «Gypsy», «Easy Livin'», «The Wizard», «Sweet Lorraine» y «Stealin'".Siguen teniendo un número considerable de seguidores y realizan actuaciones en escenarios de estadios en los Balcanes, Alemania, Japón, los Países Bajos, Rusia, Finlandia y Escandinavia.
Dos de sus álbumes más conocidos: Demons & Wizards y The Magician's Birthday fueron influencias claras para bandas como Helloween y otras seguidoras del rock épico.
Uriah Heep ha lanzado veinticinco álbumes de estudio de material original, veinte álbumes en vivo y cuarenta y un álbumes recopilatorios (incluidos dos álbumes de grandes éxitos). Trece de los álbumes de estudio de la banda han llegado a la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido (Return to Fantasy alcanzó el número 7 en 1975), mientras que de los quince álbumes de Uriah Heep en el Billboard 200, Demons and Wizards fue el más exitoso (número 23, 1972). A finales de la década de 1970, la banda tuvo un éxito masivo en Alemania, donde el sencillo «Lady in Black» fue un gran éxito.
Su popularidad disminuyó en los años 80, hasta el punto de que se convirtieron principalmente en un grupo de culto en Estados Unidos y Europa.
Uriah Heep fue la primera banda de occidente en tocar en la Rusia soviética, bajo la política de Gorbachov, llamada glásnost.
Su formación actual está formada por el guitarrista Mick Box, el tecladista Phil Lanzon, el vocalista Bernie Shaw, el baterista Russell Gilbrook y el bajista Dave Rimmer. Han experimentado numerosos cambios de alineación a lo largo de sus 55 años de carrera, dejando a Box como el único miembro original restante. Los ex miembros notables de la banda han sido los vocalistas David Byron, John Lawton, John Sloman y Peter Goalby; los bajistas Gary Thain, Trevor Bolder, John Wetton, Bob Daisley, Paul Newton y John Jowitt; los bateristas Nigel Olsson, Iain Clark, Lee Kerslake y Chris Slade; y los tecladistas Ken Hensley, Gregg Dechert y John Sinclair.

Grabación
Uriah Heep terminó la gira del álbum The Magician's Birthday el 17 de junio de 1973 en el Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena de Binghamton, New York (Estados Unidos) y se fue a grabar su siguiente álbum de estudio al Chateau d'Herouville (Francia) para eludir problemas fiscales. La grabación se completó entre los meses de junio-julio con Peter Gallen como ingeniero.

El álbum que se titularía Sweet Freedom es sólido, aunque bastante convencional. Con el reconocimiento mundial ya en su haber, la banda dejó atrás el mundo de la fantasía en sus letras y exploró la versatilidad, incorporando elementos de funk en temas como "Dreamer" y un número acústico al estilo de los cantautores contemporáneos en "Circus". Mientras tanto, Ken Hensley había estado grabando su propio material, más suave en comparación; su debut en solitario, Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf, fue lanzado ese mismo año.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en 7 de septiembre de 1973 por Bronze en el Reino Unido. El lanzamiento original en vinilo venía en una carpeta desplegable, con las letras impresas en su interior. Además, incluía una página central con una fotografía de cada miembro de la banda.

El álbum alcanzó el puesto 18 permaneciendo 3 semanas en lista. Fue certificado plata por más de 60.000 unidades vendidas.
También fue publicado con Island / Bronze en Alemania (puesto 12 de las listas), Austria (puesto 9 de las listas), Dinamarca (puesto 14), Noruega (puesto 2), Finlandia (número 2), Países Bajos, Italia, Suecia, Yugoslavia, Francia, España, Grecia, Turquía, Israel, Japón (puesto 45), Australia (puesto 19), Nueva Zelanda, Singapur, Venezuela, Brasil y Sudáfrica.
Fue editado en septiembre de 1973 por Warner Bros Records en los Estados Unidos y Canadá cuando la banda ya se encontraba de gira por allí. Alcanzó el puesto 33 en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos. Fue certificado oro (más de 500.000 unidades vendidas) por la RIAA el 5 de marzo de 1974; fue el cuarto álbum de oro de la banda en Estados Unidos. Alcanzó el puesto 5 en Canadá.

El sencillo Stealin'
Del álbum se extrajo el sencillo Stealin' que se publicó en 17 de agosto de 1973 en el Reino Unido con Sunshine en la cara B. No llegó a las listas.
En Estados Unidos fue publicado en octubre de 1973. Alcanzó el puesto 91 en el Billboard 100.
También fue publicado en Alemania (puesto 40), Países Bajos, Nueva Zelanda (disco de oro), España, Italia, Portugal, Francia, Noruega (puesto 9), Dinamarca, Austria, Australia y Grecia.

Opinión personal
Es un álbum más suave que los anteriores, menos heavy, menos prog y más rock&roll. Aunque Stealin' es uno de sus temas más conocidos, no es de mis favoritos del álbum. Me gustan más los coros y la guitarra poderosa de One Day, el crescendo de Sweet Freedom, y el álbum se cierra con lo que más me gusta, Circus una balada con guitarras acústicas y el apoteósico Pilgrim, lo más cercano al progresivo del álbum.
