Todd Harry Rundgren (Upper Darby, Pensilvania, 22 de junio de 1948) es un cantante, compositor, multiinstrumentista, artista multimedia, ingeniero de sonido y productor musical estadounidense que ha interpretado una amplia gama de estilos como solista y como líder de la banda de rock progresivo Utopia.
Es conocido por su música sofisticada y a menudo poco ortodoxa, sus espectáculos teatrales ocasionalmente lujosos y sus experimentos posteriores con el entretenimiento interactivo. Es conocido especialmente por dos de sus álbumes, aclamados por la crítica: Something/Anything? de 1972 y A Wizard, a True Star, de 1973. Como productor destacan sus trabajos con Meat Loaf, New York Dolls y XTC. También produjo videos musicales y fue uno de los primeros en adoptar y promover varias tecnologías informáticas, como el uso de Internet como medio de distribución de música a fines de la década de 1990.
Rundgren es considerado un pionero en los campos de la música electrónica, el rock progresivo, los videos musicales, el software informático y la entrega de música por Internet. Es un inventor prolífico y ha aportado grandes avances a la industria de la grabación, como PatroNet, el primer servicio en la historia de suscripción a artistas en la internet. Organizó el primer concierto interactivo de televisión en 1978, diseñó la primera tableta gráfica en color en 1980 y creó el primer álbum interactivo, No World Order, en 1994. Fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll en 2021.
En la cultura popular es recordado por temas propios como It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference, Hello It’s Me y especialmente por el tema I Saw the Light. También se le considera precursor del género power-pop. El álbum Something/Anything? (1972) fue influyente para muchos artistas en dicho género.

Después de su tercer álbum Something/Anything?, Rundgren se alejó de las baladas pop directas presentes en este álbum a un territorio más experimental y rock progresivo en lanzamientos posteriores, comenzando con A Wizard, A True Star, el cual sigue siendo una influencia en las generaciones posteriores de músicos lo-fi (que utilizan medios de producción de baja calidad).

El contrato que tenía Rundgren con su discográfica le obligaba a lanzar una serie de álbumes en solitario durante un determinado periodo de tiempo, por lo tomó la decisión de ir alternando los álbumes en solitario con los álbumes con Utopia. En 1975 publicó con Utopia el álbum Another Live en directo pero que contenía temas nuevos. A ese álbum dedicamos este artículo. De paso también comentamos el álbum Live at Hammersmith Odeon '75.
Antecedentes
La banda que grabó el álbum debut de Utopia (1974: La Utopia de Todd Rundgren) estaba compuesta por Rundgren (guitarra y voz), Ellman (batería y percusión), Siegler (bajo acústico y eléctrico y violonchelo), Mark "Moogy" Klingman (teclados), Jean-Yves Labat (ahora en sintetizadores) y Ralph Schuckett (teclados). Poco después de que se completara este primer álbum, Labat dejó la banda.

El ex programador de sintetizadores Moog, Roger Powell, se unió a la banda en los teclados, restaurándola a un sexteto.

Ellman dejó la banda para convertirse en ejecutivo en el restaurante Beefsteak Charlie's de su familia.
Fue reemplazado por John "Willie" Wilcox, quien había sido el baterista de Hall & Oates en el álbum War Babies producido por Rundgren.

El álbum Another Live
Grabación
El álbum fue grabado en agosto de 1975.
El disco fue el primer álbum completamente en vivo de la banda, el primer álbum de Utopia en incluir a los futuros pilares Powell y Wilcox, y el último en presentar a Schuckett y Klingman. El trío de coristas Arnold McCuller, David Lasley y Phil Ballou también eran nuevos en el grupo y participaron en la gira de verano de la banda, siendo reemplazados en septiembre por la futura estrella Luther Vandross y Anthony Hinton, que habían realizado una gira por el Reino Unido con Utopia ese mismo año.

El lado uno contiene tres nuevas canciones que no habían sido editadas previamente, y que nunca fueron grabadas o no fueron lanzadas como versiones de estudio.
El lado dos es una mezcla de versiones en vivo de canciones de miembros de la banda y otros artistas. "Do Ya" de Jeff Lynne fue un lado B del sencillo "California Man" de The Move (1972), que tenía un lado B de doble pista que también incluía la canción "Ella James".
Portada
Además de referirse al hecho de que el álbum fue grabado en vivo, el título es una paráfrasis obvia de la frase "Another Life", haciendo referencia al concepto filosófico oriental de la reencarnación, como se alude en la primera pista del lado uno. El título impreso del instrumental de Powell "Mister Triscuits" fue supuestamente el resultado de que el editor de Powell transcribió erróneamente su título completo original, "La Tabla Esmeralda de Hermes Trismegisto".
La ilustración de la portada y el concepto para el lanzamiento en Estados Unidos fue de Jane Millett.

Lanzamiento
El álbum fue lanzado en noviembre de 1975 por Bearsville Records. Sin singles lanzados para llevarlo más alto, el álbum alcanzó el puesto #66 en las listas Billboard 200.
Como hemos comentado en Reino Unido e Irlanda se lanzó con una portada diferente.

Opinión personal
A pesar de ser en directo son canciones en su mayoría inéditas. Muchos comentan que la banda gana en directo. Además el álbum tiene un sonido muy bueno para ser en directo. A destacar la cara uno que son composiciones originales de rock progresivo en la que el nuevo teclista Roger Powell brilla más.
Recepción
En la reseña del álbum por Stephen Thomas Erlewine en AllMusic:
Es difícil decir exactamente por qué Another Live funciona mejor que Utopia o Initiation de Todd Rundgren, las dos incursiones anteriores de Rundgren en el rock progresivo con sintetizadores...Dicho esto, las epopeyas de rock progresivo que componen la primera mitad del álbum son más profundas que antes, posiblemente porque la banda ha resuelto los problemas de su estilo, desarrollando un sonido unificado y provocativo. Todavía tiende a ser un poco excesivo e impenetrable, pero los momentos intrigantes flotan en la superficie con una frecuencia alarmante.Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Live at Hammersmith Odeon '75
El 9 de octubre de 1975, Utopia tocó su primer concierto en el Reino Unido en el Hammersmith Odeon de Londres con la reducida formación de Rundgren, Siegler, Powell y Wilcox, con coros de la futura estrella del soul Luther Vandross y Anthony Hinton (un ex miembro del quinteto vocal de Vandross de principios de la década de 1970, Luther). Este concierto fue grabado por la BBC para su difusión y desde entonces ha sido ampliamente pirateado. El material de audio de este concierto fue lanzado oficialmente en 2012 en Live at Hammersmith Odeon '75 en vinilo y CD.
